Associated British Ports South Wales consists of the Ports of Barry, Cardiff, Newport, Port Talbot, and Swansea. Collectively these ports handle more than 12 million tonnes of cargo every year and cover an area of 3,400 acres.

We are seeking a dedicated and motivated General Purpose Marine Operative to join our team based in either Cardiff or Swansea Port. As a General-Purpose Marine Operative, you will play a crucial role in supporting the safe and efficient operations of our port facilities.

The shift pattern operates primarily on a rolling pattern of 12 days on 6 days off. When working a flexible approach is required, operating on a mixture of day shifts and tidal work.

The shift pattern primarily operates from Monday to Friday between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM, with the flexibility to work on weekends when necessary. Additionally, there might be occasions when you are is expected to work outside the standard 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM hours.

**Accountabilities**
- Tending to the needs of vessels in the Lock
- Reporting of incidents, damages, and Lock Gate operational performance to the appropriate Marine Operations Supervisor.
- Routine maintenance and cleanliness of lock and dock area.
- Operate road bridges in accordance with Lock Controllers’ directions.
- Respond to oil spill and other emergency incidents within the dock and act in accordance with on-scene commander’s directions.
- Operate and communicate effectively with VHF radio.
- Dependent on present skill level as required, to undertake:

- The role of Lock Controller in Barry / Newport or Swansea
- Undertake other related duties as directed by the Marine Operations Supervisor.
- Mix of tidal shifts and day work shifts as required on a flexible basis.
- Oil spill emergency response training and preparedness drills.
- Undertake scheduled inspections, emergency preparedness drills and resilience procedures as instructed by the SEW Marine Operations Supervisor
- Liaise with the Local Port Service (LPS) for the co-ordination of information such as hot work permissions, lock side maintenance work that commenced off tide, state of readiness of lock, weather information, when providing Lock Control Cover

**Skills, experiences, qualifications, and competencies**

**Essential**
- Computer literate including Word & Excel to effectively handle company systems.
- Able to communicate effectively verbally and written
- Work efficiently within a small team.
- Willing to operate in a flexible working environment on own initiative on a rotating shift pattern.
- Willing to undertake training associated with a flexible role
- Full UK driving licence.

**Ideal**
- Working knowledge Marine Safety / Quality Management systems and procedures.
- Recent experience within a marine environment.
- Competency in VHF radio operation.
- Work within a customer-based environment.
- Good Attitude to continued learning.

In this context, it means that an employee's pay is not fixed but can increase as they meet certain training, experience & job responsibilities.

In this case, your pay will increase after six months of employment due to completion of training that will be provided by Associated British Ports.
