Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to work towards joining our band 6 internal rotation, rotating through our adult acute teams (Neuro/Critical Care, Specialist Medicine, and Stroke teams) and the acute paediatric team. We have two full-time permanent posts on offer, allowing the post-holders to develop knowledge/skills working with a wide range of patients across different specialties including regional services. Having achieved competency for band 6 there will also be the opportunity to later start to develop more advanced dysphagia management skills.
- We are a supportive team with a high level of clinical expertise. There are strong links with the wider MDT. There will be opportunities to develop leadership skills through projects and delivering training. in some parts of the rotation there is a requirement to work on the weekend or bank holidays as part of a rota.Main duties of the job

To work towards the independent management, triage and prioritisation of own caseload as part of a team, providing specialist SLT assessment and intervention based on evidence based practice for people with communication and/or swallowing difficulties, supporting their families, carers and other professionals.

There will be opportunities to develop and delivery training and supervise and support assistant Speech & Language Therapists.

Working for our organisation
- NUH is a large teaching hospital, across 2 sites: Queens Medical Centre and City Hospital. The SLT service works across both sites covering the adult and paediatric/neonate wards, working alongside a separate ENT service. We work across a very broad range of acute specialties including Healthcare of the Older Person, Respiratory, and Critical Care.- NUH host a number of regional services including Neurosciences unit, Major Trauma Centre, a comprehensive Stroke unit, Trent Cardiac centre, Burns Unit and Upper GI services. We also have SLTs within the Neuro-rehabilitation unit, the MDT neuro-rehabilitation outpatient services, and an SLT service for Neurology outpatients.Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
- Recognised Speech & Language Therapy Degree Qualification
- Health Professions Council - License to Practice
- Registered member of RCSLT
- Evidence of successful completion of short courses related to client group

Experience

Essential criteria
- Significant post qualification experience in at least one relevant clinical area, working with adults with dysphagia & communication difficulties
- Well established knowledge of assessment tools for specialist group
- Established knowledge of a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions relevant to the client group.
- Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team
- Demonstrates effective ability to prioritise a large caseload
- Evidence of post-graduate dysphagia training
- Evidence of completing RCSLT newly qualified competencies

Desirable criteria
- Advanced dysphagia training
- Experience of supporting other staff and students
- Achieved level 5 RCSLT dysphagia competency (specialist dysphagia practitioner)
- Completion of preceptorship programme where available

Professional skills

Essential criteria
- Able to work as an integrated member of the MDT
- Able to plan, prioritise and organise own workload.
- Able to use computer programmes and systems appropriate to the post.
- Excellent written communication and presentation
