This is an excellent opportunity to join our Emerging Technologies Design team as a Design Engineer specialising in video compression, advanced engineering and headend design.

The Job
As a member of the Emerging Technologies team within Content Technology & Innovation, you will design and deliver systems at the forefront of content processing and distribution via Internet and satellite platforms.
- Take responsibility for the design and definition of comprehensive systems, ensuring these can support the provision of service to required and agreed levels
- Identify opportunities for optimising the set-up and configuration of systems to improve the level of service provided to the business
- Provide advice and support to other internal groups to recommend appropriate technology for the implementation of systems solutions
- Define, recommend, maintain and ensure adherence to technical standards for the systems, and provide technical systems consultancy to projects
- Undertake research and development activities to determine how emerging technologies can be used to support business objectives
- Build effective communication across all business areas within and to ensure knowledge and experience is shared for mutual benefit
- Perform compression efficiency investigations as part of ongoing projects
- Design, build and operate TPOC systems, demonstrate findings to stakeholders
- Write engineering white papers, prepare and conduct technical demonstrations, deliver presentations
- Champion predict and prevent ethos by suggesting innovative solutions
The Skills
Systems Design
- Experience in designing digital headend systems for Broadcast or OTT involving compression components
- Full understanding of designing systems for high availability to the broadcast grade of availability
- Knowledge of key components in content preparation supply chain for Linear and VOD
Video Compression
- Advanced level understanding of MPEG-TS carriage of video codecs, buffer models, PCR/PTS, bitrate
- Understanding of DVB standards governing broadcast platform
- Demonstrable experience working with H.264 and MPEG-2
- Awareness of industry trends in MPEG (VVC, EVC etc) and other: JPEG-XS, JPEG2000, AV1
- Strong understanding of traditional rate control methods (CBR, VBR, CRF) and novel trends (CAE)
- Practical experience troubleshooting compression issues is beneficial
- Experience in running objective video quality assessments is beneficial
- MPEG-DASH and HLS experience is desirable
Practical compression products experience
- Open source tools such as FFMpeg, x264, x265
- Commercial products experience is preferred, e.g. AWS Elemental, Harmonic, Synamedia, NTT Data, Ateme, AppearTV, etc
Cloud technologies
- Either a practical experience and ability to build solutions using at least one cloud services provider is highly desirable but can be compensated by matching on-premises infrastructure experience
- Knowledge and experience of serverless compute
- Linux command line utilities
- IP Networking fundamentals on a level of Cisco ICND1
Data analysis
- Descriptive statistics
- Data engineering tools (e.g. Python, R, MATLAB, Excel, etc)
- Data visualisation skills, ability to create a simple and visual narrative to explain complex issues and implications
- Ability to write in Python is strongly desireable
Communication
- Experience of demonstrations to senior executives
- Excellent writing skills (architecture and design documentation, interface specifications, white papers, reports and presentations)
- Influencing stakeholders
Education
- Education to a numerate degree level or highly relevant compensating work experience
