North Yorkshire Council is excited to offer an opportunity to start a career in Outdoor Education. We have two residential centres, Bewerley Park Outdoor Education Centre near Pateley Bridge and East Barnby Outdoor Education Centre near Whitby. Our centres specialise in the personal development of young people through real outdoor education and adventure learning.

North Yorkshire’s Outdoor Learning Service is looking to recruit to two apprentices lasting 15 months (starting mid 2023). Apprentices will receive a salary of £18,327 for the first 12 months, followed by a salary of £19,340 (pay award pending) as an unqualified teacher for the remaining 3 months.

**ABOUT US**

Welcome to the mountains, moorland, lakes, rivers, woodlands, caves, and a Jurassic coastline of North Yorkshire - this is our classroom, it’s where students experience an outdoor education adventure so extraordinary, they discover capabilities they never knew they had, whilst learning how to respect and take care of our natural environmentcreating life-long memories along the way. Since 1940, we have been at the heart of real outdoor education in Yorkshire and North-East England. Our two outdoor education centres, Bewerley Park in the Yorkshire Dales Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and East Barnby in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, offer a wide range of residential and day courses for primary and secondary schools, through to higher education, youth, and adult groups. We are proud to have a well-established and highly experienced staff team that work with all our groups and are key in developing apprentices.

**TASKS AND TRAINING DETAILS**

A week usually starts with a staff briefing, followed by preparation for the busy week ahead with visiting schools, with checks and preparation/ tidying of equipment. Once groups arrive on site, much of your time will be occupied on programme. When groups are not using the centre time will be taken up training, completing site projects or maintenance tasks. Programmes vary but will typically include several adventurous and teambuilding activities. Following the departure of the group at the end of the week, some time is often spent organising the centre and performing checks ahead of the next group’s arrival.

***

You will be:

- Working with school and youth groups (and occasionally adults) through a mixed programme of outdoor and adventurous activities
- Preparing, tidying and maintaining site equipment, resources and facilities
- Working within the team of teaching staff, including supporting other functions within the centres.
- Be responsible for the centre and oversight of residential groups as a duty member of staff and provide overnight sleep-in cover for which an additional allowance is paid.

Your training will ensure that you will develop the skills to teach outdoor and adventure learning to young people. Much of this will be delivered in-house, however apprentices will be offered a mixture of internally run, or external nationally recognised awards.

Training courses can include minibus driving, outdoor first aid, and instructional and leadership qualifications in: walking, climbing, mountain biking, caving, paddle sports and forest schools.

Apprentices will also gain an important understanding and insight into how large outdoor centres operate including managing clients and an understanding of health and safety, risk management and residential responsibilities.

Training will predominantly take place at one of the centres, with the potential for a small amount of training at other locations.

No one week will be the same, but could include sessions with our apprenticeship provider, Channel Training, shadowing or team-teaching groups, or personal skills or training courses.

As you develop through the year you will be assessed and approved to lead groups independently, and at the successful conclusion of your apprenticeship be able to teach a residential group across a range of adventurous activities.

Following completion of the apprenticeship end-point assessment, successful apprentices will complete the fixed term 15 months delivering to groups and will be paid as an unqualified teacher.
