The applicant would ideally have achieved SPIN competence in epilepsy and/or demonstrable experience in the field that indicates a suitability to the role.

With the planned increase in consultant numbers, it is planned that the weekday nights will move to 1 in 12, and the weekends will no longer be annualised, and work on a 1:6 basis, one consultant working days, and one nights on call, to minimise the length of time of continuous on call.

There will be an expectation to share work related to relevant committees, working groups, educational supervision, and training of staff within the department.

The Children’s Unit

There are approximately 2,200 inpatient cases admitted per year to the children’s unit, 5000 children seen on PAU, 400 day cases and approximately 7,000 children are seen as outpatients.

There has been a 9 million pound investment into a total rebuild of the children’s footprint, with completed Phase 1 (outpatients) in early 2023, and is due to complete phase 2 and 3 (ward and PAU) in May 2024. Part of the build will include improved isolation cubicles, a sanctuary space, a double HDU room to allow intensive monitoring of children and a co-located PAU with a short stay unit. The ward will have a total of 24 beds including 4 for short stay.

There is a separate Raedwald day surgical unit within the Garrett Anderson Centre which delineates the day surgery away from the inpatients.

We have excellent working relations with the adult ITU staff at the hospital and have their support for critically sick children and we are served by the PANDR retrieval service (operated by Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge).

We are well served with two tertiary centres, Cambridge University Hospital (CUH), and the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital (NNUH), with Addenbrookes providing neurology, respiratory and PICU, and NNUH providing surgery and gastroenterology. We use the Evelina, London, for cardiac and metabolic, and GOS for renal.

- Work with colleagues to provide a consultant-led service with the highest standard of care
- Work with the multi-professional team to develop care pathways and clinical guidelines
- Develop and maintain good working practices within wards, outpatients and A&E
- Collaborate and promote close working links with colleagues in tertiary centres, community services and primary care
- Offer support and leadership to junior medical colleagues, nursing colleagues and other members of the multi-disciplinary team
