The consultant midwife will demonstrate strong leadership and lead on strategic initiatives to promote and facilitate safe birth and personalised care in all clinical settings. As an expert midwife they will have extensive theoretical and practical knowledge, with extensive experience of clinical skills.

The role will be to lead and support midwives to realize their full potential as autonomous practitioners placing women/persons and their families at the centre of care planning. The post holder will work closely with the Head of Midwifery and the midwifery senior management team to develop a maternity service which is responsive to the needs of women/people and staff. The post holder will promote birth as a positive experience with subsequent health gains to the woman physically, mentally, and sociologically.

The post will be characterised by the four principal role functions as described in the Department of health (DH) guidelines (DH 1999/2000): - Expert Midwifery practice and Service Development - Professional Leadership and consultancy function - Education and Training function. - Research, audit, and evaluation function.

Key

**Responsibilities**:

- To be an expert midwifery practitioner in intrapartum care and develop an advanced level of professional autonomy and accountability in the provision of care to women.
- Provide professional clinical leadership to inspire, motivate and empower midwives.
- Work in clinical practice for 50% of the time, with a clear focus on intrapartum care, but also to support care across the whole maternity pathway.
- To develop, lead and manage specific service area, externally funded portfolios, and projects
- In line with Liverpool Women’s commitment to Clinical Governance, will develop, lead, and implement standards for clinical audit and evaluate clinical effectiveness.
- To lead on midwifery written control documents, to include policies, guidelines and protocols.
- To work in collaboration with academic institutions to lead on education, research, and practice.
- To lead on developments and innovations between the Trust and relevant external agencies, locally, nationally, and internationally.
- To contribute at a senior level to the Trusts midwifery and professional agenda.
- To promote the development of the Trust as an international centre of excellence.
- To have a leading role in the development of multi-professional research.
- To evolve the role of the Consultant Midwife, proposing and negotiating extension of practice beyond traditional scope as efficiency and effectiveness requires.

Professional Leadership and People Management
- Be a visible leader who is accessible to women, visitors, and staff.
- Work collaboratively with obstetricians to plan, deliver, and support the evaluation of care for women during labour and birth.
- Support the implementation of referral, consultation, and care planning for women with complex needs who may be declining recommended options for care.
