**Job summary**:
The Areas Directorate is a joint unit between the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) and Department for Business and Trade (DBT). Our mission is to empower places - from rural areas to major cities, from prosperous places to those facing challenges in the modern economy, to bolster their potential through boosting economic growth. We lead within the UK Government on regional policy, working on a range of initiatives including support for regenerating towns and high streets, local growth plans and economic intelligence. We work at different levels, from the small neighbourhood to the large sub-national strategy.

CLGU is committed to the welfare of all our people. We take mental health and work-life balance seriously.

**Job description**:
**The role**
As Area Support, you will become an expert on economic growth and levelling up in your local area and utilise in depth knowledge of the area’s politics, economy, challenges and opportunities. Together with the Area Lead, you will hold productive working level relationships in your area including with Local Authority economic development officers, on occasion Chief Executives, HE/FE and other institutions, local government associations, local business organisations and others.

You will use your detailed local knowledge to lead on high quality briefing material tailored for the audience (usually Ministers and Senior Civil Servants), and promoting, arranging, and supporting Ministerial and other visits.

**Our team**
The South West team drives economic growth and levelling up in the South West of England, from Swindon and Wiltshire in the north east of the region to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly in the far south west. With an economy worth £64.4bn, the South West excels in a number of different industries including advanced manufacturing and engineering, aerospace, creative industries, cyber and financial services. The geography of the region also presents unique opportunities for economic growth: we have outstanding natural capital, including almost 700 miles of coastline, and are home to a number of renewable energy resources.

The West Midlands team covers a diverse region, which includes the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) at its centre, extending west into the Marches and north into Staffordshire and Stoke and Trent. The region has a strong history of manufacturing, from the heart of the industrial revolution (Telford), to the city of a thousand trades (Birmingham) and ceramics (Stoke). It hosts a number of leading universities and research institutions which support innovation.

**Key responsibilities**

**You will**:

- Support relationships with key local stakeholders, including collaborating on economic development plans in your area and supporting local authorities, universities, business groups and others in their interactions with central Government;
- Support your team to work with local partners to deliver Government funding programmes, including the £4.8bn Levelling Up Fund, UK Shared Prosperity Fund, UK Community Ownership Fund and Freeports.
- Maintaining a day-to-day relationship with local authorities and other organisations in your area, holding regular meetings to discuss programme performance and leading interventions should delivery issues be faced.
- Deputise for your SEO representing Government at meetings.
- Produce regular reporting on local economies, developing a strong understanding of economic trends and their impact on our areas.
- Use local knowledge and awareness of policy to draft briefings and correspondence on key issues.
- Support a range of engagement by the team, including developing agendas and arrangements for a range of meetings inside and outside HMG.
- Be an active member of your team, promoting an inclusive atmosphere.

Please note that there are two posts available, one in the South West area team, based in Bristol, and one in the West Midlands area team, based in Birmingham or Wolverhampton.

**Person specification**:
**Essential criteria**:

- Excellent communication and influencing skills.
- Highly dynamic and capable of delivering at pace.
- Stakeholder management and analytical skills.
- Requirement to have, or willingness to develop in-depth knowledge of the local area.

You will need to be based in DLUHC’s Bristol, Birmingham or Wolverhampton offices. There is an expectation of at least 40% of time working in the office or visiting stakeholders in the local area under current hybrid working arrangements.
