We have an exciting opportunity for a Soil and Ecosystem Scientist to join our rapidly expanding, energetic and vibrant
Plant-Soil Interactions Group
- You will contribute to research addressing how land use and management, can contribute to the mitigation and capture of greenhouse gases to help reduce future climate change. In this role you will generate a deeper understanding around how the exchange of carbon between plants, soil and the atmosphere interact with climate and land use.
This role will contribute to several net zero focussed projects, feeding into research funded by UKRI, UK government and industry. You will lead and contribute to field and laboratory biogeochemistry as well as leading on data synthesis for peer-reviewed publications.

Your main responsibilities will include:
- Designing and implementing field and laboratory experiments to address questions about climate, land use change and terrestrial biogeochemical cycles- Delivery of GHG/Carbon flux measurements (e.g., GHG chambers, soil coring, eddy covariance)- Compilation and statistical analysis of arising data from field/lab observations and experiments- Publication and presentation of results in high impact journals and conferences- Collaboration with researchers and stakeholders in the UK and internationally
For the role of Soil and Ecosystem Scientist, we’re looking for somebody who has:
- A PhD in biogeochemistry or environmental/physical sciences, with a multidisciplinary approach- Knowledge and understanding of ecosystem processes controlling the exchange of carbon and GHG’s between the land and the atmosphere- Knowledge and/or experience of eddy covariance techniques with an aptitude to develop technical skills through training- Experience in statistical methods for data analysis and handling, using R or similar- Experience of plant and soil biogeochemical analyses- A track record of relevant publications in peer reviewed journals consistent with career stage- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills, with an inclusive and collaborative approach- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail- A full UK or equivalent (manual) driving licence to access remote field sites - please confirm on your CV

- Knowledge or experience of process based GHG models or life cycle GHG accounting tools- Awareness of Measurement, Verification and Reporting (MRV) frameworks for GHG accounting
