Nottingham University Hospitals Department of Neurology is looking to appoint a substantive Consultant Neurologist with a special interest in Movement Disorders to join Regional Neuroscience team in order to support an expansion of the Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) service. The post holder will also support general and acute neurology in the Trust.

They will also participate in departmental teaching and governance. The person appointed will take an equal share in providing emergency cover and will be required to cover for colleagues during periods of absence. They will have continuing responsibility for patients in their care and the proper functioning of the department.

As a large and ambitious teaching hospital, there is an expectation that appointments should in time take on teaching roles as well as additional leadership roles as will be required to share the clinical leadership responsibilities of the department.

Main duties of the job

The post will join the established movement disorders team and will work alongside medical and nursing colleagues to deliver, sustain and develop regional and local movement disorder activities. There is a degree of flexibility in the sub-specially aspects. DBS theatre, clinic and programming sessions are required, as is supervision and support of neuromodulation nurses.

The role also requires general neurology outpatient and inpatient commitment with contribution to the HANU and CoTW rotas.

Clinical neurology forms part of the Nottingham Regional Neuroscience Unit and serves the population of Nottingham. It also provides an outreach neurological service to Kings Mill Hospital in Mansfield and covers a population of around 3 million people.

The DBS service at NUH was commissioned in 2011 to provide DBS for the East Midlands and is run by Dr Sare (Consultant Neurologist) and Mr Basu (Consultant Neurosurgeon), supported by an experienced team of DBS and neuromodulation nurses. The DBS service is expanding following commissioning of the West Midlands DBS service which will more than double the surgical capacity at NUH.

The following draft Job Plan reflects our best assessment of what the final plan will be, based on 10 PAs. There is a degree of flexibility within the job plan to support different aspects of movement disorders with overall 1.5 core SPAs (with opportunities for extra paid SPAs depending on additional activities over 10 PAs), and 8.5 PAs of DCC clinical time with a rough 50/50 split of movement disorders and general neurology, depending on the needs of the department.

The on-call commitment is currently 1:15.

Professional Registration, Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration
- Eligible to be included on the specialist register (or CCT expected within 6 months)
- CCT expected within 6 months of interview date OR CESR

Desirable criteria
- Further higher training or qualification MD or PhD

Experience

Essential criteria
- Fully competent in general neurology in outpatient and inpatient setting
- Experience of movement disorders including complex and advanced treatment of Parkinsons disease

Desirable criteria
- Experience managing and selecting patients for advanced therapies and DBS programming

Experience

Essential criteria
- Have trained in part or whole at a recognised neurology centre. In total four years training in neurology at SpR/ST level or equivalent
