We are delighted to advertise this unique opportunity for a Practitioner Psychologist to work in our regional Artificial Limb and Appliance Service (ALAS) based at Morriston Hospital, Swansea to support our patients with amputation in the South West Wales region.

This post is open to enthusiastic psychologists seeking opportunities at 8a or 8b level. Appointment is dependent on skills and experience. Should the applicant be appointed at 8a then they will be placed upon a preceptorship pathway and training and resources allowed them to develop into the 8b position.

ALAS service has a multi-disciplinary team approach and includes Prosthetists, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapist, specialist Nurses, Consultants and Surgeons. They support about 1,400 amputees who are individuals on a lifelong rehabilitation pathway. These patients and their families are coping with the process of adapting to the aftermath of their initial amputation and also the longer term issues that they face directly associated with their disability namely loss of limb.

The team is led by a very experienced and supportive manager who has been in situ for 20 years and they are seeking psychology to help individuals, families and staff to cope in a trauma informed way. A diverse range of psychological needs affect the amputee from their initial reactions to the amputation and longer term psychological ramifications, including grieving for limb loss, body image issues and functional impairment.
