We have an exciting opportunity for a Gardener to join our team. If you love gardening, we can offer you some of the most beautiful outdoor spaces in the UK to work in as well as one of the largest plant collections in Europe.
The role’s working days and hours will be split across three days of five-hour shifts. These days may vary based on garden activity but in general, will be over Monday, Tuesday and Friday each week. You'll work in both Monks House and Alfriston Clergy House on set days as part of this working pattern.
What it's like to work here:The gardens at both Monks House and Alfriston Clergy House, form a large part of the visitor experience, and we are looking for an experienced, highly organised and motivated gardener to support our Senior Gardener care for these special places.
The gardens are varied in design and planting approaches, and you'll support our fantastic volunteer teams in the delivery of high horticulture standards whilst being sympathetic to the historic locations' spirit. The work can be fast paced but very rewarding as you see your work being enjoyed and appreciated by all our visitors.
No two days are the same in the Trust, and we work together to care for our nation’s nature, beauty and history across all our locations.
What you'll be doing:As a hands-on Gardener, you’ll assist in making sure that the gardens are maintained to a high standard.
You’ll be hard-working and enthused and knowledgeable about the varied plants within the garden. This role will include a range of practical horticultural tasks to develop, enhance and conserve the garden and contribute to the delivery of projects.
You'll be helping with hard and soft landscaping and general maintenance of the garden, such as mulching, pruning, leaf clearing and weeding. You’ll support with the planting and maintenance of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants.
You’ll be helping to cut the hedges and mow our fine lawns and be proficient with the safe use and maintenance of garden machinery. You’ll also support garden volunteers and help them to make the most of their time here.
You'll help develop this team through ongoing coaching and mentoring. You'll also help manage workload and set direction for this team daily, as well as help keep them informed through regular communication and engagement. You therefore must be a great communicator and all-round people person; your interpersonal and leadership skills will be just as important as your technical horticulture skills in this role.
