**Job Description**:
**The Role**

The role includes recording contemporaneous notes for all examinations carried out whilst maintaining accurate continuity records and working to our required Quality and Health and Safety procedures. Exhibits encountered in this role cover a wide range of sample types ranging from powders and tablets to herbal materials and liquids, and also includes the examination of other items for drugs traces. Examination of these items is completed through the use of calibrated analytical balances alongside colorimetric tests, FTIR and GCMS analysis to determine an unequivocal identification of materials submitted for analysis. Staff within the Drugs team are responsible for the preservation of packaging materials for future fingerprint and DNA examinations, and as such are required to complete work within DNA controlled laboratories.

In addition the these activities, Reporting Officers are required to produce a Report/Statement for each case, and must be able to effectively communicate with both customers and other team members to ensure reports are accurate and meet our customer requirements. All reports are peer reviewed prior to release, and this role will also includes peer review of other scientists work, once a suitable level of experience is gained. Reporting Officers will also be responsible for determining appropriate examination strategies for cases examined by Forensic Examiners within the team, and take on a mentoring role for more junior members of the team**.**

**Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities**
- Carry out examination / analysis of submitted exhibits to required timescales, following suitable training and demonstrable competencies.
- Production of SFR’s / Witness Statements detailing the outcomes of examinations carried out both by themselves and by fully trained Forensic Examiners.
- Adhere to all aspects of our Customer Operational Protocols, Health and Safety requirements and the Eurofins Quality Management System.
- Efficiently manage own caseload, monitoring progress of individual cases and liaising with customers where appropriate.
- Assessing cases and providing casework strategies to the Examination Team.
- Ensure all work is authorised and completed to contracted and/ or agreed timescales and customer requirements.
- Mentor and advise other scientists, and assist with development of other team members.
- Actively seek continual improvement of methodology and processes and to assist with ad hoc projects including involvement in validations/ R & D as required.

**Qualifications**:
**Required Knowledge, Experience and Technical Skills**
- Recent experience of working in a laboratory based role, preferably UKAS accredited to ISO17025 standard
- Science based degree (BSc or equivalent)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to adapt quickly in a fast-paced, challenging environment
- Understanding and acceptance of the requirement for full adherence to the Forensic Regulators Code of Practice

**Preferred Knowledge, Experience and Technical Skills**
- Current demonstrable competency and experience in the examination and analysis of drug exhibits and understanding of forensic techniques utilised in the analysis of drugs, such as chemical tests, FTIR and GCMS
