**Main purpose**

The Caretaker will:

- Provide a safe, clean environment for users of the school building and grounds.
- Carry out repairs and maintenance tasks and DIY duties in order to ensure the buildings/grounds provide a safe working environment for pupils and staff.

**Duties and responsibilities**

**Main Tasks**
- Ongoing repair and odd job work as necessary.
- Hanging shelving.
- Hanging display boards.
- Security of the school’s buildings and grounds.
- Liaise with outside premise contractors when working on-site and when they are carrying out repairs/maintenance work.
- Receipt and distribution of any ordered goods, materials, and equipment for the school, checking delivery notes and ensuring staff receive goods ordered.
- Checking stock levels of necessary consumable items such as tissues, soaps, lightbulbs, batteries etc and ordering when necessary.
- Responsible for the School’s timely waste management collections including all recyclables.
- Organising and logging information regarding:

- Water management records
- Pest control records
- Waste management.
- The Caretaker will become a trusted ‘Key Holder’ for the school and expected to carry out any necessary duties that this may involve call out in the event alarms are triggered etc.
- Be responsible for ensuring that the highest standards of health and safety are always maintained.

**Grounds Maintenance**
- Clear leaves and litter from all paths.
- Sweep/hose down muddy paths.
- Cut back any shrubs which overhang the paths that have not been dealt with by contractors.
- Clear weeds growing on paths, playground, entrance.
- Walk the perimeter fence and check and clear litter.
- Clear paths and playground of snow and ice, leaves, animal droppings and mud.

- Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of the school’s policies, practices and procedures, so as to support the school’s values and vision.
- Make a positive contribution to the wider life and ethos of the school.

- Taking reasonable care of own health and safety and that of others.
- Co-operating on all issues involving health and safety.
- Using the appropriate work equipment provided, in accordance with training and instructions.
- Carry out risk assessments.
- Maintain appropriate record keeping.
- Ensure all equipment is maintained effectively, in line with statutory requirements.
- Not interfering or misusing anything provided for health, safety and welfare.
- Reporting any health and safety concerns to the Senior Leadership team/Line manager, as soon as possible.
- Ensuring all tasks are completed in a safe manner.

**Working with colleagues and other relevant professionals**
- Collaborate and work with colleagues and other relevant professionals within and beyond the school.
- Develop effective professional relationships with colleagues.

**Personal and professional conduct**
- Maintain high standards of ethics and behaviour, within and outside school.
- Have proper and professional regard for the ethos, policies and practices of the school, and maintain high standards of attendance and punctuality.

**Other areas of responsibility**

The Caretaker will be required to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people and follow school policies and the staff code of conduct.

**Qualifications**
- Good Numeracy and Literacy skills
- Any additional qualifications pertinent to the job role
- A full driver’s license.

**Experience**
- Experience that supports maintenance of an aspect of buildings or premises
- Experience that is transferrable to the role
- Knowledge and understanding of relevant policies/codes of practice - health and safety.
- Ability to use a range of tools and equipment, ensuring safe handling and storage.
- Experience of working as part of a team
- Experience of co-ordinating building projects and premises improvements

**Skills & Knowledge**
- Ability and willingness to work as part of a team.
- Ability to use own initiative.
- Ability to communicate effectively at all levels with internal and external personnel, contractors and suppliers.
