The Critical Care Unit at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is spread across 2 hospitals. There is a 34-beded critical care unit admitting over 1300 patients per year at Royal Preston Hospital and an Enhanced Care Unit at Chorley and South Ribble Hospital run by 19 consultants with an interest in Intensive Care, along with junior support staff. The unit at Preston has accreditation for all stages of Intensive Care Medicine training.

The unit at Royal Preston Hospital is a mixed unit made up of level 2 & 3 beds. It has a varied case mix including General Medicine, General Surgery, Trauma, Vascular, Renal Neurosciences, Upper-Gastrointestinal and Maxillofacial Surgery.

The Department has undergone a period of rapid expansion, which is reflected in the age and attitude of its career grade members

This post will be based at the Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley District General Hospital, and responsible to the Clinical Director in Intensive (Critical) Care. The post holder will be expected to have experience in Intensive Care and expected to work under distant supervision especially during out of hour’s shifts.

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest and highest performing trusts in the North West.

The appointee will be required to take part in regular educational planning sessions and will have an educational supervisor appointed and also have an annual trust appraisal.

It is essential that the applicant be committed to his or her own continuing medical education and professional development.

The duties and responsibilities outlined in this job description are not exhaustive and will be periodically reviewed and amended with the agreement of the post holder when necessary.

The out of hours duties with this post are to provide cover for the Critical Care facilities across the Trust.

We provide a full range of general hospital services to 390,000 people in Preston, Chorley and South Ribble, and aim to deliver excellent and compassionate care that meets the individual needs of every patient.

Our ambition is to become the regional hospital for Lancashire and South Cumbria, and we currently provide a range of specialist services including neurosurgery and neurology, oncology, burns and plastics, renal and disablement to 1.5m patients across the area. We have recently expanded our range of specialist services and were established as the major trauma centre for Lancashire and South Cumbria in 2012.

We employ over 7,000 staff with most of our clinical services being provided on our two hospital sites - Chorley & South Ribble Hospital and Royal Preston Hospital
