Medical Laboratory Assistant

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Sheffield Diagnostic Genetics Laboratory at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust as an MLA.
The postholder will be a compassionate, accountable individual who treats all colleagues, patients and service users with respect and seeks to deliver excellence in their role. They will share the Trust values and be committed to equality, diversity and inclusion.
The purpose of this MLA post is to provide technical support for a wide range of Laboratory Service teams within the Sheffield Diagnostic Genetics Laboratory.
The interviews will be held face to face with an practical assessment. Unfortunately we cannot accept any exceptions to this.
The post holder will be responsible to the Pre-Processing Lead & Genetic Technologists
- The post holder will be responsible to the Pre-Processing Lead & Genetic Technologists
**(dependent on which team the role is within) for**:
- Preparation and maintenance of cell cultures
- Harvesting cell cultures, slide making and staining to produce chromosome preparations
- Manual and automated nucleic acid extraction
- Input of data into the laboratory computer system (StarLIMS)
- Preparation of reagents
- Prekaryotyping of G-banded samples using Cytovision software
- An aspect of technical work, particularly within the Prenatal section
- Processing fluorescencein situhybridisation slides
- Handling and distributing stock
- Use of the Biomek FX robotic platform to prepare plates of PCR reactions
- Checking quality of PCR reactions and preparing them for Sanger sequencing
- Use of StarLIMS to manage work, prepare worklists and record results
- Receipt of primers for PCR reactions including re-constitution and storage
Responsible to the Estates Organisation Lead for
- Preparing laboratory & clinical waste for appropriate disposal
- Contributing to the maintenance, cleaning and monitoring of laboratory safety cabinets, centrifuges, fridges, freezers and water baths
- Maintaining a cleaning schedule for laboratory benches and sinks
