Beacon Support Ltd. are recruiting for a reliable Study Support Assistant to work with higher education students at Hartpury College. This role involves the provision of specialist study support and practical assistance to students with disabilities, enabling students’ access to learning.

This support is involves supporting students in adapting to the academic demands of higher education such as providing information, helping with time keeping, and helping with organisational skills. This may be supplemented by practical support, for example, library support or workshop support.

**Main responsibilities**

The following are examples of responsibilities that may be expected:

- Assisting students through notetaking and the transcription of teaching and learning materials
- Helping students to understand tasks, assisting with library skills and accessing material
- Providing personal and practical assistance and supporting students with access and mobility needs
- Providing practical support around the campus, including orientation.
- Locating, photocopying, scanning, downloading and printing academic materials.
- Reading aloud.
- Scribing.
- Social support when on campus.
- Supporting students to develop their independence and autonomy in HE by providing a range of enabling strategies such as time management and organisational skills.

You may provide support for students who require notes to be taken on their behalf, for example because they have a physical impairment or mental health condition. You will be required to produce an accurate record of the content of lectures, seminars and discussions. Notes should contain pertinent information from the session, including diagrams and references to presentation slides and handouts. These are given to students within an agreed time frame, and in in the student’s preferred style and format.

You will be expected to have the skills and competence to work effectively, at the direction of the student.

- To understand the needs of students with disabilities in a higher education environment
- To observe boundaries and maintain a professional role
- To work within the policies and procedures of the institution
- To maintain student confidentiality
- To act in the best interests of learners at all times
- To ensure that any concerns are addressed in a timely manner and are referred to the Support Manager
- To manage paper work effectively, including accurate time sheets, and promptly submitting them at the end of each month
- To attend CPD events and actively manage personal development in agreement with the Support Manager.

**Qualifications/skills required**:

- Demonstrative English and IT competency, preferably with nationally recognised achievements such as GCSEs.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills
- Disability awareness
- Excellent interpersonal skills, diplomacy and empathy for others.
- Ability to work autonomously and use initiative.
- Experience of studying or working in a Higher or Further Education setting

If the support activity includes supporting wheelchair users, you will be provided with specific health and safety training relevant to the physical demands of the activity.

This is a fixed term/rolling contract.
