Trainee Advanced Critical Care Practioner

The programme is centred around the four pillars of advanced practice. On completion of both theoretical and practical components of this training post the advanced critical care practitioner will be able to demonstrate safe, advanced health assessment, diagnosis, decision-making and pharmacology/non-medical prescribing.

Demonstrate critical thinking in the clinical decision-making process. They will work collaboratively with the Critical Care team to meet the needs of patients, and will play a key role in service delivery and adherence to policy and procedures. They will also be instrumental in guiding junior medical and nursing staff in relation to relevant protocols and procedures.

Provide and assured safe care to patients and service users and maintain a safe environment for all according to local and national standards and evaluating and researching patient safety across all of Critical Care.

Play a pivotal role in the operational development of the Critical Care unit. They will initiate, manage and drive change within the unit, innovating changes in practice for the benefit of patient care in line with current Trust and local programmes.

Facilitate an effective workplace culture across all Critical Care (and the organisation that sustain person-centred, safe and effective care through self-awareness, leadership, active learning, development, improvement and innovation).

To perform physiological assessment of critically ill patients, regardless of location.

Use advanced clinical history taking, clinical examination and interpretation skills to assess patients’ needs in terms of diagnosis and treatment plans.

Demonstrates advanced assessment skills and sound judgement when dealing with complex clinical information.

Prescribe and administer a range of drugs as a non-medical prescriber.
