Consultant in Palliative Medicine

An exciting opportunity has arisen for two community-based palliative medicine Consultants to join our team. These posts are intended to focus on developing the integration of community specialist palliative care services in both Hull and East Riding localities with community services and specialist palliative care partners. The opportunity has emerged from a vacancy arising from a previous post and additional innovations in delivery of community services for example, through the virtual ward model. The post holders will join an existing team of consultants in Palliative Medicine who are employed by Hull University Teaching Hospitals (HUTH) to provide Palliative Medicine input to the acute hospital, Dove House Hospice & Hull and East Riding community services. The post holders will be predominantly based in the community with sessions in the hospice and/or hospital to promote integrated working.

Applicants must have a high level of experience and expertise in their relevant areas of interest and should be able to demonstrate expertise at Consultant level in palliative medicine. Applicants should have good communication skills, be willing to attend, lead and participate in MDT meetings, work effectively as part of a team and as a collaborator with partners.

For both posts, a standard full time Job Plan will contain 10 programmed activities (PAs) per week. Applications also welcome from those who wish to work LTFT.

There are opportunities to participate in undergraduate teaching within the HYMS medical school curriculum. It is envisaged that this post would include the supervision of GPs with Extended Role and Clinical Nurse Specialists & it is expected that the appointee will have completed Educational Supervisor training or complete this within a short time of taking up the post.

Participation in the regional on call Palliative Medicine Consultant rota will be expected. This is currently a frequency of 1 week in 14 weeks. This does not attract any additional PAs and is currently paid at category B supplement.

**HUTH has two main sites**: Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital with an annual budget of approximately £500 million. The Trust employs around 11,000 staff and serves an extended population of 1.25 million, delivering a number of outpatient services from locations across the area.

The Trust’s secondary care service portfolio is comprehensive, covering the major medical and surgical specialties, routine and specialist diagnostic services and other clinical support services. These services are provided primarily to a catchment population of approximately 600,000 in the Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire area.

HUTH provides specialist and tertiary services to a population of 1.25 million extending from Scarborough in North Yorkshire to Grimsby and Scunthorpe in North East and North Lincolnshire respectively.
