Are you interested in joining a team that is dedicated to public health research? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you The Culture Collections Team is looking for a new member to join our team. We are a Biological Resource Centre that provides a service maintaining and supplying strains of cultured cells and microorganisms for public health research. Our fully integrated service is structured to underpin science with significant scientific, manufacturing, and business activities. We operate from laboratories across Public Health England and from a specialist cryo-storage facility on the Porton site

Are you passionate about microbiology and looking for a new challenge? As a Microbial Archivist, you will be responsible for planning, organizing, and carrying out the many and complex day-to-day activities involved in maintaining microbial archives. You will advise the NCTC Operations Manager, the Biobank Manager, and other reference microbiology staff on samples and specimens that require long-term archiving. Additionally, you will develop biological sample archiving and disposal policies in line with ISO:9001, ISO:20387, and ISO17025 Quality Management Systems.

**Job description**:
**Responsibilities section**:
The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

- Responsible for day to day people management in NCTC and Biobanking Teams.
- Develop professional/Management expertise by undertaking further appropriate training as required.
- Actively involved in Team Building activities to facilitate interaction and optimise group performance
- Ensure that health, safety and welfare is an afforded priority over other issues and demonstrate a commitment to health, safety and welfare regarding self, staff and visitors
- Participate in the internal and external safety audits, as required
- Assist with the development and authorisation of COSHH and Risk Assessments.
- Comply with safety policies, procedures, COSHH and risk assessments.
- Assist compliance with ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 17025:2017 and other accreditation and certification standards.
- To deputise for the Quality Assurance and Regulatory Manager in quality activities relating to NCTC and Biobanking work.
- To organise and review a range of biological collections (including clinical specimens and microbial cultures) and associated metadata and to introduce long term archiving plans.
- Where appropriate to organise, freeze-dry and QC microbial cultures (including Hazard Group 3 material, fungi and bacterial phage) to ensure long term preservation of material.

**Person specification**:
**Essential Criteria**:
**Essential**
- Educated to degree level in biomedical science or equivalent level of experience of working at a similar level in specialist area
- Evidence of continuous professional development
- Evidence of several years’ laboratory experience in clinical diagnostic or bacteriology field e.g. Food or pharmaceutical.
- Experience/competency in working with Hazard Group 2 and 3 organisms
- Evidence of interest in laboratory safety
- Skills for communication on complex matters and difficult situations, requiring persuasion and influence

**Desirable**
- Appropriate MSc in field of Biological Sciences
- NEBOSH or equivalent Health and Safety experience e.g. Safety Officer role
- Evidence of supervisory/management experience of staff
