**Team overview**

Ofcom’s Spectrum Group manages the use of wireless spectrum throughout the UK to ensure that it is used efficiently. As the UK’s communications regulator we make spectrum available for new and innovative services such as next-generation mobile or satellitesystems whilst ensuring that existing solutions like Wi-Fi and radio can continue to operate.

The Engineering team within Spectrum Group provides high-quality technical modelling, analysis and measurements to inform Ofcom’s spectrum policy and management decisions.

**Purpose of the Role**

Reliable modelling of radio wave propagation lies at the very core of spectrum management. The Senior RF Propagation Engineer role is an exciting mix where your in-depth understanding of this specialist field combined with wider engagement at policy levelhelps ensure a solid technical basis for new and existing wireless services. The role requires creativity and insight to improve and develop predictive models underpinning the authorisation of spectrum use; the national and international allocation of frequenciesto services; interference management processes; and the compatibility assessment between different users and services.

You will work with colleagues throughout the organisation as well as stakeholders across the communications sector providing and developing technical advice on wireless technology, intersystem coexistence; interpret what this means for UK spectrum management;and recommend how Ofcom can best balance the interests of stakeholders and consumers through its policy work. The role also provides the opportunity for you to represent Ofcom and the UK in national and international technical standards bodies such as ITUStudy Group 3 for Radiowave Propagation.

**Essential Skills, knowledge and experience**
- Understanding of radio wave propagation theory, radio channel characteristics, and appropriate modelling techniques for low and high spectrum bands
- Hands on experience of developing and improving empirical and deterministic propagation models using advanced modelling techniques such as ray tracing
- Statistical data analyses and proficiency in the use of propagation measurements for model assessment and calibration
- Knowledge of propagation models’ topographic datasets requirements and prediction quality vs complexity trade-offs
- Awareness of ITU Study Group 3 Recommendations
- Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to convey the context, results and conclusions of technical work to non-technical audiences.

**Qualifications**
- To be qualified with an engineering or similar degree or possess an equivalent level of experience.
- Proficient in use of propagation models or performing radio wave prediction studies using commercial planning tools or bespoke implementations in MATLAB, Python, etc.
- Ofcom is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and you will have support towards attaining and maintaining professional registration.
