**Job summary**:
The Food, Water and Environmental (FW&E) Microbiology Laboratories are specialist microbiology laboratories within the UKHSA. Based in three sites across the country, the laboratories are geographically well placed to work with local authorities in order to protect the public from health threats posed by contaminated food, water and the environment. These laboratories provide a range of specialist frontline diagnostic public health services to Local Authorities, Port Health Authorities, and the NHS and nationally to the Food Standards Agency.
You will have responsibility for the efficient national operation of the (FW&E) Microbiology Service for optimal public health delivery. In partnership with the Lead Public Health Microbiologist (LPHM) for FW&E Microbiology Services, you will provide vision, leadership and direction to the FW&E Microbiology Laboratories, taking responsibility for financial and business management and providing technical support to the laboratories as needed.
You will also deputise for the Lead Public Health Microbiologist in providing leadership and attending meetings as required.

**Job description**:
The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:
- To have responsibility for the efficient national operation of the UKHSA FW&E microbiology service for optimal public health delivery.
- In partnership with the Lead Public Health Microbiologist (LPHM) for FW&E Microbiology Services, to provide vision, leadership and direction to the FW&E Microbiology Laboratories, and to lead in strategic modernisation and development, including identification, prioritisation of, and support for specific modernisation developments and research areas
- To have overall responsibility for the provision of efficient and effective service delivery by the network of laboratories, and in accordance with UKHSA policies and procedures, and in line with the various accreditation schemes
- To lead delivery of the modernisation of FW&E microbiology diagnostic services, ensuring the provision of high-quality microbiological testing, which meets scientific requirements and complies with best practice and are safe, economical and effective
- To take responsibility for budget management and financial and business management of the FW&E Microbiology Service. This includes having responsibility for budget setting in collaboration with Unit Heads, Laboratory Managers and the LPHM FW&E Microbiology Services ensuring compliance with UKHSA and Standing Financial Instructions.
- To take a lead in managing income generation including managing externally funded research projects
- To lead on modernisation developments with the LPHM FW&E Microbiology Services to ensure that the laboratories makes an effective contribution within Microbiology Services.
- To provide technical and professional support to the LPHM and the Business Manager, FW&E Unit Heads and Laboratory Managers.
- To act as deputy to the Lead Public Health Microbiologist, along with other members of the Senior Management Team providing leadership to the Network in his/her absence.
- To deputise for the Lead Public Health Microbiologist at meetings as agreed according to the skills of the post holder.
- To support the Business Manager in performance monitoring of the UKHSA’s microbiology assets within the FW&E Microbiology Service

**Essential**
- Educated to master’s level or equivalent level of experience in specialist area.
- Eligible to be a Food examiner
- At least ten year’s postgraduate practical, technical and theoretical experience in Public Health/Food/Medical Microbiology and Laboratory Sciences
- Extensive knowledge and expertise in various managerial fields, including finance, HR, business, project management, planning, leadership, procurement etc., gained either by qualifications or experience
