Purpose of Job
To assist and train to plan and control the road schedule on a rolling daily basis. Maintaining customer requirements in accordance with the Company expectations and Statutory Regulations. Ensure service levels are cost effectively maintained safely. Liaise and communicate with customers (where appropriate) the Planning Manager and Contract Managers to ensure maximum utilisation of the road and rail wagon fleet. Assist in supervising the road motor drivers and sub-contractors to complete work safely and to set standards. Complete road related administration completion of paperwork, files and compliance documentation.
Principal Activities
Plan the daily road schedule and control it the following day to ensure vehicles are used cost effectively to deliver and collect containers on time.
Continually review the road schedule in the light of information regarding customer priorities and requirements. Maintain regular contact with Contract Managers to keep up to date with customer demands.
Notify customers when problems with deliveries occur, politely and courteously. Resolve customer problems as a matter of priority.
Supervise the Drivers and Sub Contractors, setting clear standards and monitoring performance, maintaining standards.
Administrate tasks relating to bookings, records and analytical data. Maintain regular contact with the Drivers and Sub Contractors to ensure the daily schedule is running smoothly and that deliveries and collections.
When necessary use hired road fleet resources to meet customer requirements and assist the Road Transport Manager in ensuring costs for hired resources are kept to a minimum.
Prepare the drivers start times and ensure overtime worked is kept to a minimum.
Communicate with the Road Transport Manager to identify commercial opportunities
Maintain contact with customers and Freightliner Limited staff to ensure terminal and regional staff are aware of customer needs and special requirements. Maintain good customer relations through regular communications.
Ensure that all road movements are performed in conjunction with customer requirements, predicting potential risks with regular contact with drivers in regards to late runners.
Maintain accurate communication with Customers, Contract Managers and Customer Services regarding progress of jobs, container numbers, demurrage claims, and in particular, late runners in accordance with company procedures.
Ensure that drivers are advised of specific customer and job requirements.
Ensure containers/trailers from out based depots t cover nights/followings day’s business.
Ensure all legislative requirements are met with regard to driver’s hours on duty and dangerous goods movements etc.
Adhere to a three shift roster system between the hours of 06.00 and 20.00 hrs
On call is the equivalent to one week in three for which an additional payment will be made.
Undertake other duties as directed by the Road Transport Manager commensurate with your post.
Experience, Knowledge, Qualifications and Training
- Good understanding of Word Office/Excel/Word.
- Good understanding of Road Operations Legislation
- Good analytical brain
- Willingness to train and develop in many aspects of Road transport
