**About NCSC**

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), a part of GCHQ, is the UK’s lead operational body for cyber security. But its role, and in particular its objective to make the UK the safest place to live and work online, means that much of its work is unclassified and is citizen-facing.

As the NCSC’s Chief Technology Officer, you will be responsible for maintaining our status and credibility as the National Technical Authority for cyber security - the ‘team captain’ for the UK’s cyber security as a whole. You will be the public face of NCSC’s technical advice and guidance as part of our portfolio of services. You will set direction for our research portfolio and quality assure our technical and public advice. You will nurture, coach and mentor our world class cyber security experts and build our talent pipeline for the future. You will be a key part of the NCSC’s Board and work closely with counterparts in the intelligence services, across Whitehall, and the cyber security industry as a whole. You will promote our partnership and engagement with industry to extend NCSC reach and impact, and our relationship with academia to draw on the latest cutting-edge research and data.

Under the National Cyber Strategy the NCSC‘s mandate was reaffirmed to deliver an ambitious, world-leading programme. That strategy emphasised the importance of increasing cyber resilience across the UK and building ‘security by design’ into future technology that the UK will rely on. It aims to make the UK’s digital homeland automatically safer so that it is easier for UK citizens to live and work online. Its success is based on harnessing world-class technical expertise in a way that gives practical improvements to everyday systems, and through that to the lives of UK citizens.

**The NCSC’s main functions include**:
**to act as the lead operational unit for major cyber security incidents affecting the UK.** This includes running the detection work around major attacks, supporting the victims in their remediation efforts, and heading the cross-Government response. This can involve acting as the lead operational unit in the Government’s crisis management centre, COBR, as well as acting as the primary organisation communicating to the public;
**to maintain and enhance world class covert and overt capabilities to detect and prevent major cyber-attacks.** NCSC draws on the full capabilities of GCHQ and its partners to reduce the ability of hostile states, organised crime syndicates and other attackers to undermine the UK;
**to provide UK businesses, public organisations, voluntary bodies and private citizens with effective, easy to follow advice on staying safe online**. This is underpinned by world class technical expertise which we use to communicate complex technological issues to businesses, Government and the citizen;
**to advise Government on the requirements for the cyber protection and resilience of the UK’s critical national infrastructure**.

**to head the Government’s world-leading programme of technological improvements to **deliver protection at scale, tackling high-volume commodity attacks through a range of digital services known collectively as Active Cyber Defence, and

**to play a key role in the development of UK cyber skills and commercial cyber security capability.**

Partnerships are crucial to the effective delivery of the NCSC’s mission. The National Crime Agency and wider law enforcement are key partners in the prevention and detection of cyber-attacks and bringing the most serious cyber criminals to justice. MI5, MI6 and the MoD work closely with the NCSC on defending the UK against the most serious threats with a cyber dimension. Government Departments and other public authorities rely heavily on NCSC advice. The private sector is a key customer and enabler of NCSC advice.
