**Who can apply?**
To help you identify if an apprenticeship is right for you, we have outlined the main eligibility criteria below.
- Most of our apprenticeships are open to anyone over the age of 16 and there’s no upper age limit. **Please note that for the Rolling Stock Maintenance apprenticeships, you’ll be required to work shifts (including nights) in year 3 and 4 of the programme. Therefore, successful applicants must have reached the age of 18 on the 1st July 2026.**:
- You must not already be in full time education at the point of the apprenticeship start date.
**Apprenticeship role responsibilities**
We are recruiting a Rolling Stock Maintenance Apprentice to join our Fleet Engineering team in our Canton and Taffs Well depots.
This is an exciting opportunity during which you will undertake a 4-year defined programme to gain the skills and experiences required to become a fully qualified rolling stock maintenance technician. You will attend college full-time in your first year to complete the EAL Level 2 Foundation Qualification in Electrical Engineering and the first year of Level 3 BTEC Qualification in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. You will attend college on a day release basis for the remaining 3 years.
**Your key responsibilities will include**:
- Shadowing and supporting our maintenance team over 4 years, you will develop the required knowledge and skills to safely maintain traction and rolling stock.
- Attend college full-time in your first year to complete EAL Level 2 Foundation Qualification in Electrical Engineering and first year of Level 3 BTEC qualification in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
- Attend college on a day release basis for the remaining 3 years to complete vocational learning to achieve an NVQ level 3 in traction and rolling stock maintenance, assessed in the workplace and Level 3 BTEC and HNC qualification in electrical and electronic engineering.
- Complete additional placements at Canton and at other TfW Depots and complete projects as required to develop an understanding of the wider TfWRL business.
- You will be expected to carry out a range of tasks of varying complexity involving both mechanical and electrical disciplines on a variety of trains operated by TFW.
- You’ll keep abreast of learning opportunities by following TfW’s apprenticeship programme and taking advantage of on-the-job training to ensure you develop and can effectively contribute to TfW projects.
**Safety Role Profile**
Please note this is a safety critical role and a PTS Medical will be required prior to start date.
