We share extensive links and research collaborations with our sister Institutes of Evolutionary biology and Cell Biology within the School of Biological Sciences. Our focus is on fundamental mechanisms of immune function and dysfunction, human, animal and global health and our researchers are fully integrated within the University-wide Edinburgh Infectious Diseases network. The excellence of our research culture is recognised through our Wellcome Trust PhD programme ‘ Hosts, Pathogens and Global Health’, which closely links with the allied Wellcome PhD programmes, ‘ One Health Models of Disease ’ (hosted within the Roslin Institute) and “ Integrative Cellular mechanisms ” (hosted within the Wellcome Centre for Cell Biology ).

The Institute is a vibrant research environment supported by high levels of research funding from UKRI, The Wellcome Trust, ERC and others. Our academics contribute to national and international funding research panels, Government advisory committees and have shaped global health policy.

As well as regular research seminars from invited external scientists, we have a very popular and well attended weekly series of ECR presentations, highlighting in an informal format the progress of our PhD students and postdocs. This encourages the interactive research links between researchers in different areas of immunology and infection and matches the collaborative ethos of Institute, where linking between disciplines is encouraged. This is also reflected in our current innovations in the undergraduate taught
