**Salary**: £26,080 - £28,617 - SP6

Hours: 36 hours a week / 52 weeks a year

**Job Profile: Premises Caretaker**

**Purpose**:Reporting to the Premises Manager, the Premises Caretaker will serve the mission of Salesian School by being a professional, positive and visible member of the Premises team tasked with ensuring the two school sites are safe, well-maintained and always presented to a high standard for students, staff and visitors. To carry out maintenance and caretaking activities on a daily basis, to aid the smooth running of the school and to work as part of a team to continually improve the school environment.

**Salary**: SP6 - £26,080 to £28,617

**Hours**: 36 hours per week, 52 weeks per year.
Preferred hours of work 12.30 - 8.30 pm Monday to Friday (term time) and 8.00 am - 4pm Monday to Friday (school holidays). Applicants who wish to work on a Saturday instead of one day in the week will be considered.

Some weekend and occasional later evening work will be required to support school events and lettings.

**Person Specification**
- Good awareness of premises and safety issues and able to respond to hazards
- A good range of practical skills e.g. carpentry, painting, use of tools, plumbing
- A working knowledge of statutory policies and legislation
- Holds a clean driving licence
- Ability to clearly and confidently communicate with staff (at all levels), students and visitors
- High level of initiative, self-motivation and ability to work independently
- Boundless enthusiasm, a positive outlook with a “can do attitude”
- Capacity to work very hard under pressure whilst being calm and resilient

**Responsibilities**

**Security**
- To be responsible for the end of day lock up, including checking classrooms, closing windows, ensuring lights and other electrical equipment is turned off and the site(s) alarmed and left secure.
- To liaise with cleaners and evening / weekend lettings
- To respond to emergencies affecting the school premises outside school hours
- To be familiar with the operation of intruder and fire alarm systems
- To report any security concerns or incidents to the Premises Manager
- To have key holder responsibilities

**Environment**
- To proactively and continually ensure the school is kept clean and tidy through litter picking, leaf clearance, appropriate disposal of rubbish and ensuring critical areas (eg. toilets, canteen, staff rooms) are monitored
- To set up areas for specific school activities such as assemblies, lunch service, exams and meetings, as requested by the Premises Manager or other staff, moving furniture as necessary
- To undertake some general checking and cleaning of some parts of the school, eg..buffing floors
- To liaise with the in-house and contracted cleaners on a daily basis
- To adjust heating and lighting and other mains services to meet student / staff need whilst minimising waste and operating as efficiently as possible.
- To respond to Health and Safety issues around the school taking immediate action to remedy any issue either by action or report to Premises Manager
- Carry out emergency cleaning in critical areas (eg. toilets) as required

**Site Maintenance and Repairs**
- To carry out day to day maintenance and repair of the school, internally and externally
- To monitor the work of appointed contractors as appropriate and sign off job sheets
- To carry out period checks of classrooms and other school areas, reporting defects to the Premises Manager
- To carry out regular testing as directed, for example fire alarms or emergency lighting
- To maintain and clean site equipment
- To assist in school improvement works such as classroom refurbishment or external grounds works
- To respond to staff requests with regards maintenance and repairs.

**Porterage**
- To carry out the removal or relocation of office and general school furniture and equipment as necessary paying due attention to manual handling safe practices and maintenance of safe access/exit routes and walkways around the various halls, offices and classrooms;
- To receive and promptly distribute deliveries of goods around the site whilst minimising time and effort where possible;
- To respond to staff requests for porterage
