We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, skilled and experienced analyst/researcher, to join our multi-disciplinary Public Health Division within the largest Local Authority in the country and lead work that contributes to tackling health inequalities in the city.

This is a permanent position, which is part of the Evidence Team within the Knowledge, Evidence and Governance sub-division. We work with a wide range of stakeholders to improve health and wellbeing, including internal directorates, academics, the Integrated Care System partners, justice and the third sectors. The team you will be joining are engaged in a dynamic and diverse range of research around health inequalities, including mental health, disabilities and deprivation.

**About Us**

The Evidence Team are responsible for the JSNA Deep Dive Programme, which is a rolling programme of in-depth needs assessments about health and wellbeing in Birmingham. This means that the Evidence Team are usually researching two or three different health and wellbeing topics at any one time. The current research portfolio includes learning disabilities, mobility impairment and dual diagnosis. The Evidence Team’s Deep Dive Programme research supports the Health and Wellbeing Board’s work in tackling inequalities within Birmingham.

**The Role**

The post-holder will support the Service Lead to define and lead on projects and partnerships to reduce health inequalities across our diverse city. This is an exciting research opportunity and involves researching health inequalities, writing in-depth needs assessments and creating recommendations for action. This role would suit an experienced analyst/researcher, with a passion for improving public health and an interest in expanding their research portfolio.

**Skills & Experience**

Key expectations and deliverables for the role are:

- Extensive experience of public health research.
- Substantial experience of supporting the Public Health Division with data expertise.
- Extensive knowledge of public health data sources in the West Midlands and significant experience of working with them.
- Considerable experience of working with a wide range of partners and stakeholders in support of public health research.
- Practical experience training and developing colleagues, through both formal and informal opportunities.
- Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of public health priorities and relevant policy environment.
- Substantial experience developing evidence-based policy recommendations to inform public health business decisions across the Council, NHS and other partners.
- Substantial experience of the Birmingham City Council commissioning process.
- Expertise in seeking, analysing and accurately interpreting the health characteristics of the Birmingham population, using a variety of different information sources (e.g. needs assessments, literature, service data, NHS operational data).
- Substantial experience of assisting or leading in the preparation and delivery of in-depth needs assessments and council documents.
- Substantial experience of producing research summaries and reports.
- Substantial experience of analysing and interpreting qualitative data (e.g. from interviews and focus groups).
- Substantial experience of analysing and interpreting quantitative data from standard public health databases (e.g. births, deaths and hospital admissions).
- Substantial experience of assisting or leading in the preparation of presentations (including the preparation of slides and posters) and delivering oral presentations.
- Experience of peer reviewing and providing relevant epidemiological and project specific comments.
- Substantial experience of participating in client-facing meetings and being a recognised member of the project team.
- Experience of writing reports and presentations for committees (e.g. the Health and Wellbeing Board).
- Maintaining awareness of relevant policy environment, data governance guidelines and accessibility guidelines.
- Assisting with organisation and delivery of external data collection.
- Experience of working with procurement colleagues in the delivery of appropriate tenders for public health initiatives, ensuring that the Directorate’s statutory obligations are met and that all transactions are conducted in accordance with financial regulations.
- Supporting the Director of Public Health Annual Report (as required).
- Utilising project management methodologies to enhance delivery of evidence products.
- Contributing to planning and delivery of training sessions.
- Deputising for Service Lead (as required).
