The role of Head of School for Anaesthetics is to work with and support the Postgraduate Dean in leading the delivery of a wide range of functions, aligned to the Health Education England mandate.

The Head of School is professionally and managerially accountable to the Postgraduate Dean. The Head of School will focus upon improvement of learner supervision, assessment and experience, engagement of faculty and ensuring effective educational outcomes, both now and in the future. The role is evolving and will also focus on whole workforce transformation and developing multi-professional links.

The School of Anaesthesia encompasses Anaesthesia, Intensive Care and Pain Medicine. The School also takes responsibility for delivering anaesthetic and intensive care training to trainees undertaking Acute Care Common Stem (ACCS) Training and as such works closely with the ACCS Head of School.

The senior officers within the School of Anaesthesia comprises 5 TPDs in Anaesthesia, one TPD in ICM, one TPD in Pain Medicine and one TPD for Educational Delivery. The Head of School, and School Officers are well supported by a full time School administrator, and they work closely with local and national representatives the the Royal College of Anaesthetists, and the faculties of Intensive Care and Pain Medicine.

It ensures that the shape and skills of the future health and public health workforce evolve to sustain high quality outcomes for patients in the face of demographic and technological change. HEE ensures that the workforce has the right skills, behaviours and training, and is available in the right numbers, to support the delivery of excellent healthcare and drive improvements through supporting healthcare providers and clinicians to take greater responsibility for planning and commissioning education and training.
