Assistant Psychologist

Applications are invited for an Assistant Psychologist to support the Northern Cancer Alliance 'Improving Psychological Wellbeing in Cancer Project'. This project is informed by the good practice guidance document 'Commissioning Guidance for Cancer Psychosocial Support: A guide to improving psychologically informed care and clinical outcomes for adults affected by cancer in London' by the Transforming Cancer Services Team, (2020).
The post will be based at North Tyneside General Hospital, North Shields, but the work will require liaison/ travel across North Tyneside & Northumberland.
To assist in project work including event planning, project related administration, presentations, and the collection and interpretation of data. Tasks will be agreed and reviewed at appropriate intervals under the supervision of a qualified psychologist, but the post holder will take these tasks forward independently on a day-to-day basis.
To a more limited extent, when appropriate, to support and enhance the professional psychological care of patients within the Cancer Psychology Service, providing psychological assessment and psychological interventions under the direct supervision of a qualified psychologist.
To assist in clinically related administration, conduct of audits, collections of statistics, development of audit/research, teaching and other project work.
To role model compassionate and inclusive leadership in order to shape the creation of a collective leadership culture within the trust. This means demonstrating a consistent leadership style which (a) engages, enables and empowers others (b) uses coaching to promote ownership of learning and quality improvement and (c) facilitates team working and collaboration within teams / departments and across organisational boundaries.
NHCT manages three major locality hospitals at North Tyneside, Wansbeck and Hexham, plus a number of smaller community hospitals and clinics from Tynemouth to Berwick on Tweed, in addition to our state-of-the-art Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, the first of its kind in England. We also care for people in their homes and provide services from facilities in local communities such as health centres. We give people greater choice and control over their care to help them to live independently at home and avoid hospital admission where appropriate. The Northern Cancer Alliance (NCA) is an NHS body, committed to improving services for people affected by Cancer, across the North East and North Cumbria. Macmillan is a national charity, also committed to improving the wellbeing of people affected by cancer. This post will support the NCA/ Macmillan ‘Improving Mental Wellbeing in Cancer Project’. The postholder will support the development of this work in the Northumbria locality, working closely with the Lead Clinical Psychologist(s) in this area.
