The Head of the Cardiac Physiology Department is the lead clinician and departmental manager for the team of Cardiac Physiology staff across the Newcastle Hospitals and is responsible for the day to day management of the department ensuring that an efficient and effective service is delivered at all times. The post holder has responsibility for health and safety of patients and visitors, implementing new techniques, maintaining departmental records and producing departmental guidelines / reports, plans including recruitment of staff and teaching within the department and regionally. The post holder will have responsibility for ensuring that tests are performed, and results are produced, in line with departmental and national guidelines and in accordance with local safety policy. They will also routinely undertake all highly complex and routine diagnostic tests.
Clinical skills Perform an extensive range of diagnostic tests, including highly complex tests only available at a specialist centre. Ability to set up highly complex tests, explain the nature and purpose of the test to the patient, analyse data which necessitates knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of several specialties, diagnosing complex raw data and reporting of the results. Explanation of test results to patient. Responsible for selecting best treatment for patients based on study results Liaise with University academic staff with reference to the development of Cardiac Physiologists and support staff education and training.
- Liaise with training providers, deliver training, mentor and assess students Individual, small groups in specific areas o Update student records and assessment plans in a timely manner. Relate factual information to anxious patients and relatives regarding examinations and procedures o Adapt explanations of highly complex tests to potentially unwell and terminally ill paediatric and adult patients, whose first language may not be English. o Persuade/negotiate and motivate e.g. upset children, distraught adults unwilling or afraid to comply with instructions As a flexible working friendly organisation, we want to be sure that you can work in a way that is best for us and for our patients, and for you.
