This is a rare opportunity to join the South West Regional Management Team and to bring the National Trust’s strategy to life in the South West and at a portfolio of places. The National Trust is a conservation charity that looks after and provides access to our nation’s heritage, landscapes and nature for everyone to enjoy. You'll provide inspirational, inclusive leadership for property portfolios (Wiltshire Landscape, which includes the Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site, and the Cotswolds Countryside portfolio), and sponsor important strategic areas of work for the South West (such as our response to major infrastructure programmes like the A303 and A417, work in cities and renewables).
What it's like to work here:This role will be multi-faceted, high pressure at times, demanding and rewarding, and every day will be different. You'll require the ability to think strategically, to develop and communicate compelling visions for places, whilst having a practical understanding of day to day operational property management and being able to turn plans into reality. You'll need to prioritise and manage your time, as well as giving clear guidance to your teams about their priorities.
The National Trust places an emphasis on great leadership of self and teams, and on leadership values and behaviours. You’ll need to be able to communicate effectively and build rapport with a diverse range of people, from Trustees and senior external stakeholders to our operational teams on the ground (staff and volunteers) and local communities. There are established teams and a wealth of knowledge in the Trust and amongst partners about our properties. The work you will be doing will draw on and build on that knowledge and the progress made to date.
Follow the links to see our strategy and our views and responses to the road schemes.
What you'll be doing:You’ll lead the Wiltshire Landscape and Cotswolds Countryside portfolios, managing and developing the operational teams. You’ll support the General Managers to develop and deliver the Property Business Plans, including budgets and KPIs, and monitor portfolio performance.
Co-creating and communicating compelling visions for conservation, access and visitor experience at our places, building the plans and business cases for investment, and seeing these through into delivery is a central part of this role.
You’ll sponsor South West landscape and major infrastructure projects and programmes, with an immediate focus at Stonehenge and Crickley Hill in response to Highways England’s proposed major road schemes. These projects and programmes are complex, working to influence and deliver outcomes both on and off Trust property. Actively liaising with partners and stakeholders, managing reputational risk and overseeing our external/internal communications and media responses is part of the role.
You’ll lead, motivate and support the programme and project teams; setting direction, co-ordinating activities and taking responsibility for successful implementation within the Trust’s governance structures. Building a sense of shared purpose and understanding across the matrix and dispersed team is important. You’ll need to take a long-term perspective, planning and thinking ahead to identify opportunities and mitigate risks before they arise. You’ll seek creative and practical solutions to difficult problems.
You'll play an active role on the Regional Management team, participating in leadership of the South West. Depending on capacity and opportunity, you may also lead on other major projects or programmes within the region.
This role will require you to share your time between different National Trust offices and South West properties. Your main office base will be in the South West and close enough to the property portfolios for which you are responsible to enable reasonable travel and travel expenses. Exact location can be flexible and negotiated.
For further information about the role, please see the role profile attached.
