**Job Specification**

Tomson Consulting works on a wide range of projects including (though not limited to);
- Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG): mapping, appraisal and delivery for landowners and developers,
- Habitat creation and enhancement for rural stakeholders (community groups, businesses, private landowners),
- Design of farming projects to support carbon sequestration, habitat improvement/creation and food production,
- Energy management of buildings, industrial processes, transport,
- Building and estate decarbonisation with a specialism for old, listed, and historic buildings,
- Low-carbon heat network feasibility and DPD,
- Renewable energy feasibility studies

As part of our ecology team, you will be working with landowners, local authorities, businesses, farmers and NGOs to help deliver a range of services. Each project is different, but currently we are experiencing a high demand for services relating to BNG provision. Therefore, you can expect to be involved with projects that involve habitat baselining, Metric 4.0 calculations, map creation using GIS and habitat creation modelling.

Another significant element of our work directly involves low carbon, regenerative agriculture. We help our clients to measure and manage carbon on their farms, with advice relating to habitat creation and other forms of land management forming a key part of this service. As an example, we have been awarded funding to trial an innovative new idea that will facilitate the community buy-out of UK farmland for conversion to wildlife friendly, regenerative food production. Expect to learn a lot about farming through this role

We also work closely with our sister company District Eating Ltd, whose aim is to develop sustainable low carbon horticulture using waste heat and CO2. On occasion the two businesses work together to develop holistic circular economy solutions that span sectors, industries, and demographics. Consultants working with Tomson Consulting will occasionally get the chance to work on District Eating projects.
- **We are looking for a consultant with at least two years’ experience in the ecology sector who has a flexible, practical, and ‘can-do’ attitude and excellent organisational, people and communication skills.**_

Because Tomson Consulting is small and growing, you will need to be flexible and able to cope with managing multiple projects simultaneously, learning and developing new concepts that span sectors. We need you to be extremely organised and efficient, able to speak and write confidently, and to have excellent written and verbal communication skills at all levels. We are looking for someone who can work well in a team, supporting graduates and directors in the team with project development and reporting, as well as marketing activities such as writing of case studies, and educational blogs.

**Key skills**
- Minimum of 24 months experience in a relevant consultancy role,
- A first-class degree grounded in ecology/conservation/land management/agriculture,
- Experience in conducting habitat surveys,
- Familiarity with ecology reporting (PEAs in particular),
- Experience with mapping software (QGIS or ArcGIS),
- An understanding and interest in UK habitat/conservation legislation,
- Ability to work independently,
- Numerical literacy, and ability to use Microsoft Excel to a good level of proficiency,
- A strong work ethic,
- A positive attitude,
- Excellent communication skills,
- Strong organisational skills,
- Willingness to learn and persevere,
- An open mind and an ability to solve problems,
- Ability to develop and maintain client and colleague relationships,

- Knowledge of the agricultural sector; knowledge of agricultural subsidies (eg ELMS),
- Understanding of carbon markets,
- Protected species licences and/or knowledge of protected species legislation,
- An understanding and interest in sustainable resource use and/or renewable energy technology

**Working arrangements**

The position is based in Sheffield. We support flexible working and have co-working space in Sheffield available 5 days per week. Most staff work in the co-working space several days per week, and work from home on other days.

Following an initial 6 months-1 year probationary period (depending on progress) we would then consider allowing remote working from another location, though due to ongoing commitments Scotland would be preferred.
