Humber and Yorkshire Coast Bowel Cancer Screening Center

Specialist Screening Practitioner Post

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Humber and Yorkshire Coast Bowel Cancer Screening Centre for an experienced nurse to join our growing bowel cancer screening team. As part of the specialist team providing bowel cancer screening, you will have a key role in the assessment, care and support of individuals participating within the Humber and Yorkshire Coast Area.

You will be present at colonoscopy lists within the relevant departments to support the participants and collect data. You will attend colorectal cancer multidisciplinary team meetings (MDT’s) within the participating individuals’ relevant Trust.

The bowel cancer screening programme has been available for 14 years and is aimed at people 56 - 74 years old. This is soon to be expanded down to people aged 50 years old.

We are looking to recruit to a full time post based at Castle Hill Hospital, working mainly in the north bank covering Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire and Scarborough. However the post-holder will be required to work within any part of the Humber and Yorkshire Coast Area depending upon needs of the service. You will also be required to work flexibly to cover the working day; this may involve evening and weekend work.

You will be involved in assessing participant’s fitness for bowel cancer screening. You will assist in the complex decision-making processes ensuring a safe journey through their screening episode. You will act as the participants’ advocate, supporting and empowering them to make informed decisions about their screening episode, to ensure they receive a quality service that would encourage them to participate in the future. You will have to deal with sensitive issues including anxiety regarding the outcome of their episode in clinic and cancer diagnosis post investigation.

You will be involved in health promotional activities to encourage access and participation within bowel cancer screening, interact with Public Health England and ICS's. You will be expected to contribute (via local governance frameworks) to the development and quality assurance of the screening programme.

We welcome RN’s who have been registered for at least five years and have experience and specialist knowledge to work within the bowel cancer screening programme. You will be expected to undertake and pass the specialist bowel cancer screening practitioner course which may involve travelling and overnight stays. You will also have to undertake a 2 day IT training course which may involve an overnight stay. There will be structured support and induction to help develop you into this role.
