**Head of Communications - (**Inside IR35)**
**Contract Term: 6 months**
**Contracting Authority: DEFRA**
**Location: Bristol, London, York or Newcastle - Hybrid**
**In the Defra group, we deal with a vast range of issues that profoundly impact on people’s lives. **As the Head of Communications your main responsibilities would be**:
- Leading the communications from DDTS to support:
- The introduction of a Virtual Whiteboarding solution, Mural
- The introduction of a new suite of Video Conferencing replacing legacy devices
- The Mobile Services Contract Retender & Transition project
- Ensuring information is appropriate or tailored for the correct audience.
- Working autonomously to lead day to day comms operations and determining activities without support from Senior Managers. Leading day to day operations and problem solving with responsibility for large areas of activity across geographically dispersed teams in DDTS.
- Being a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders across an allocated portfolio of activity in the DDTS team and across Defra group - presenting communication options and recommendations and influencing and persuading Senior Managers and Directors on a frequent basis.
- Building and maintaining a strong collaborative network and lead the day-to-day relationships with senior leaders and project / programme leads - using negotiating, consulting and interpersonal skills to achieve co-operation over communication products.
- Designing, delivering and evaluating internal communications strategies and products to support DDTS’ and Defra group’s priorities and ongoing technical transformation programmes - using specialist judgement and a high degree of creativity and flexibility to overcome complex and varied problems.
- Developing work programmes and using resources to maximise cost effectiveness and ensuring the completion of projects.
- Proactively managing the delivery of key communication and engagement activity, including targeted content and events that influence and enhance the organisation’s reputation.
- Work collaboratively with teams across the Defra group to ensure key messages are joined up.
**You’ll have relevant experience in**:
- Proven experience in a similar role - highly skilled in producing and designing engaging and effective content (e.g., blogs, news articles, briefings etc.).
- IT Change Communications experience is a MUST
- Experience in using metrics and user feedback to define, evaluate, and improve content.
- Experience of making immediate decisions in rapidly changing environments or working to very tight deadlines.
- Understanding and experience of digital technology to be proactive in anticipating issues and addressing underlying causes.
- Experience of working at all levels within an organisation and experience of challenging senior grades to deliver better communication outcomes.
- Politically aware when evaluating the impact of work and formulating proposals for senior grades.
- Experience of using communication skills to resolve complex problems - using initiative in developing new solutions or adapting existing ones.
- Stakeholder Engagement.
- Experience of developing and delivering successful communications within large, geographically dispersed organisations who are working remotely.
- Extensive experience in designing and delivering effective internal communications plans based on IT change with significant experience of using insight to inform activity.
- Government or Civil Service background ideally
