Synnovis Infection Sciences are seeking an enthusiastic Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our Microbiology team to support and assist the Biomedical Scientists in the diagnosis of infections in patients for Guys and St Thomas’s Hospital for 2 x fixed term roles

The post holder would be expected to join a team of MLAs that work 37.5 hours/week and be prepared to work as part of an extended working day rota that includes week day Core (9.00am to 5.30pm), Early (8.00am to 16.30pm), and Late (11.30am to 20.00pm) shifts and Weekend/Bank Holidays.

No formal qualifications are required although a good standard of education (to GCSE level or equivalent) is necessary and as the department is computerised, keyboard skills would be a great advantage. Applicants should be organized; with good communication and team working skills and the ability to work effectively. Full in-service training will be provided.

Main Duties will include the processing microbiological samples under the supervision of Biomedical scientists and the successful applicant will be expected to be involved with stock ordering, record keeping and maintenance of equipment and analysers.

The UKAS ISO15189 accredited Microbiology department receives approximately 320,000 bacteriological specimens per year. The department currently uses the Epic Beaker (LIMS) and Q-Pulse.

The role will require you to process a range of samples (swabs, Urine, faeces and other samples) for the diagnosis of pathogenic bacteria from patients with suspected infections.

Although Microbiology generally requires manual skills in processing samples we also have a range of automation including the Bruker MALDI-TOF, Vitek, BD FX, BD MGiT and BDMAX, Sedimax Urine analyser, DS2 and Cepheid GeneXpert system. MLAs are required to oversee the analysers as well as troubleshoot any issues; so good analytical skills will be an advantage

Core Duties

Technical
- To receive and prepare specimens for testing using automated, semi-automated and manual methods.
- Ensure quality control measures are carried out to monitor analytical performance, take corrective action where applicable and report any failures to a senior member of staff
- Undertake basic troubleshooting of analytical instruments and automated analysers under supervision of senior staff

Laboratory Informatics
- To use information systems, specialist and general software, in data entry and the collection and interpretation of information to assist in the provision of laboratory services

Administrative
- Receive, sort and log patient samples on Laboratory information system

Personal Specifications

Essential Criteria
- Educated to GCSE or equivalent in Maths, English and Science
- Working as a team
- Use of Equipment including machinery and/or analysers
- Good IT skills

Desirable
- Previous laboratory experience
- Stock management
- Handling clinical material
