Now more than ever, commercial contracting has a vital role in delivering on our commitments to Carbon Net Zero. As Crown Commercial Service (CCS), we play a key role in helping the Public Sector buy the goods and services they need to deliver vital public services, £27 billion worth last year alone.

We are seeking deep sustainability expertise to support CCS and our customers to realise their Carbon Net Zero ambitions. This new team has a varied role responsible for CCS sustainability policy, advising public sector customers on key themes and programmes, identifying new products and services for our agreements, and being known for influencing the Public Sector Sustainability response at senior levels across all sectors.

The Sustainability Team will have enterprise wide influence and reach, acting as a strategic enabler to realising the CCS business plan and engaging with customers and suppliers. Given the crosscutting nature of the role, you will need to be flexible and able to work closely with teams across CCS and the wider Government, forming virtual teams and working across boundaries

**As a Head of Sustainability your main responsibilities would be**:

- Be a sustainability expert, a key influencer in the sustainability and carbon net zero space while maintaining key relationships with external stakeholders such as BEIS to develop our knowledge and understanding of the market as well as to promote our strategy.
- Maintain knowledge of funding and policy issues related to sustainability by maintaining insight and links to CNZ related policy, legislation and funding.
- Develop a service level offer for the provision of advice and guidance to customers based on CCS Customer needs.
- Be the link between customer requirements and carbon reduction across the built environment supply chain.
- Support the development of customer sustainability plans and strategies bringing in support from members of CCS’s commercial team.
- Supporting business development activity related to CNZ agreements.
- Provide advice and guidance both internally and externally on:

- CNZ strategy development
- Commercial strategies to deliver CNZ aspirations
- Develop Procurement plans that make best use of CCS commercial agreements.
- Own the supplier PPN 06/21 compliance and support agenda.
- Establish and own the ongoing development of the CCS Carbon Reduction Plan and Annual Report commitments.
- Establish a mechanism for encouraging suppliers to develop more innovative and faster paced solutions to accelerate CNZ and identify gaps in our portfolio.
- Prepare information on sustainability for stakeholders including writing reports, questionnaires, webpages, letters, social media and communications on behalf of management.
- Drive the wider sustainability project as necessary and maintain our sustainability procedures and policies.

**You’ll have relevant experience in**:

- Thorough understanding of carbon reporting and environmental legislative requirements for example within the built environment
- Ability to write recommendation reports to suit varying audiences (technical and non-technical).
- Evidence of delivering innovation and engaging positively with continuous change and improvement.
- Previous experience leading, consulting or advising organisations on sustainability transformation.
- Networking and client liaison including ownership of internal and external client relationship development.
- Previous experience working within or alongside a Public Sector Organisation
- Understanding of GCS OASIS model

**Desirable Criteria**:

- Experience of sustainable transport and green procurement.
- Experience of climate change, energy policy and the commercial aspects of these fields will be advantageous for this role, but not essential.
- Experience of working within Transport Planning, Logistics, Warehousing.
- Experience of Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001) and Energy Management Systems (ISO 50001)
