**Job description**:
- Are you a scientist looking for wide ranging daily challenges that require scientific analysis and inventive options that culminate in operational solutions?
- Do you want to put your scientific skills into action to deliver direct advice, guidance, effects, and analysis to an operational military user community?
- Emerging and future threats to our armed forces require new technical capabilities to solve a new problem set. You will be joining a unique unit that comprises of scientists and engineers who provide direct technical support to specialist military users. As a senior science expert in the team, you will provide a pivotal role in solving current and future technical problems by delivering novel solutions that will have a direct impact to success on military operations.
- To become a part of this unique organisation, you must be a talented scientist who can manage multiple complex projects through trials, tests and experimentation whilst dealing directly with the specialist military users to find solutions to real-world challenges. Information that you will handle will be sensitive and you will draw on your impeccable people skills whilst maintaining the highest integrity.- You will have an OfQual level 6 qualification in a relevant scientific discipline with relevant work-related experience.**Responsibilities**:
- As part of the embedded technical support team, you will hold the primary management position for the development, experimentation, concept delivery and project management of Physical Sciences and Technologies. This will involve taking special user requirements and delivering concept designs and prototypes ready for experimentation. These experiments may be ‘ground up’ design deliverables or adaptions of Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) products for specific operational tasking. You will have the responsibility for the delivery of scientific advice including specialist areas specifically Laser technologies, optics, and spectroscopy, and for undertaking development and testing of a range of solutions for the specialist user community.
- Delivery of scientific solutions to the Specialist User:
- Solutions (in areas such as signature management, multi-spectral imaging, and laser-based technologies) will be delivered as experimental prototypes, adaptations of COTS equipment, reports, and briefings.- Problem Solving - You will often be challenged with problems that are extraordinarily complex and challenging for which there is no precedent, requiring creative thinking and collaboration. On occasion, you must have the ability to deviate from established procedures to find a minimum viable solution.
You will have to work closely with the specialist operational user. They will be a soldier or an officer from across the specialist user community of any rank, whom at times will have little or limited technical knowledge. You will need to fully understand the requirement from the user and analyse the problem or event from a Physical Science and Technologies perspective to convert the ask to a deliverable technical solution.- Decision Making - You will be required to consider the full context of your solutions and advice, including any legal, policy and health and safety issues. You will make informed decisions based on your knowledge, the task and a logical ‘course of action’ methodology. You will follow unit QMS (Quality Management System), and ISO 9001 systems and your decisions need to balance a range of factors including technical specifications, safety, delivery timescales, financial, legal, ethical and policy guidelines.
- Autonomy - You are solely responsible for your output and as such you will be expected to source information, knowledge, and advice from wider scientific bodies such as Academia, Industry and Government Agencies to support your activities.
- Resource Management - You will be responsible for the management of resourcing to achieve the delivery of the outcome, including writing business cases, research potential suppliers, and support financial/commercial departments to work with industry. You are solely responsible for all laser and general safety in the laboratory, making sure policy is strictly followed.
