Pat Tester

We are searching for a new team member
Do you want a PAT testing job? We are searching for a new person to join our team, but we won’t recruit just anyone and we’re not in a rush to appoint.
We’ll wait until the right person comes along.
The right person will be City & Guilds qualified, with a minimum of 1 years' experience working as a PAT Tester - ongoing training will be provided.
We’re looking for someone that fits in with our current team - a nice, genuine, friendly person who likes a laugh at work, but can be professional too.
You should be reliable, punctual and polite, with good manners and personal skills.
We are a good established team that works well together; discipline is rarely an issue and we operate on a trust basis to keep morale high
- be honest, don’t take the whatsit, be a good team player and keep your clients happy - and all will be well.
You will need to be physically able as this can be a demanding job with plenty of bending down and crawling under desks
You’ll need to be able to drive, with your own vehicle to get to jobs - a PAT tester’s day is spent in client premises, so you have to drive there. Sometimes we think of our carbon footprint and car share, but it only works if we’re working together.
You should be computer literate, with a laptop and smart phone - full time engineers do their own reports, so you’ll need the laptop for that, and an understanding of excel will help. You’ll need a phone with Outlook on for your diary.
We provide you with a Seaward Apollo 600 PAT Tester, and full tool kit to do your job. Engineers like to add to these with their own personal devices to help them do their job and that’s fine. You’ll also be provided with a spare parts kit, uniform, etc.
We pay a good wage, higher than the national average for the industry, at a pro-rata level based on experience and qualifications (see below). Also included is 28 days holiday including bank holidays, a 40 hour working week with paid breaks and company pension.
We work mostly Monday to Friday but you must be available for some weekend work, although we work with you so as not to impact too much on home life. The working day is 8 hours plus (or sometimes including) travel time. You are paid for all travel time, plus 35p per mile fuel allowance. You complete a timesheet weekly, and are paid monthly on or near the 1st of each month. Payment is in arrears. Working day start times are agreed with yourselves, but adjustable as the business requires. Start time can be as early as 7am on site, but usual is the working day. Depending on start time, finish can be up to 6pm. Later finishes may also be required as the business requires.
Location: We are based in Wallsend, just outside Newcastle upon Tyne. Prospective engineers must be based locally, within Tyne and Wear. Ideally you will be located south of the Tyne in South Tyneside/Washington/Chester le Street areas.
Training Programme
You’ll be trained to do the job initially, working with experienced team members until you’re ready to go alone. How long this takes depends on experience and qualifications - if you’re not qualified you won’t be lone working until you are, which can take a few months depending on course availability.
If you have no experience there will also be an element of ‘classroom’ based training; if you are then we will still do a bit of this, but just so you can learn about our business and standards.
Nobody is let loose on our clients until we know they are ready, so don’t worry there is no rush.
There is a 6-month training / probation period for all new starters.
Training Stages
Level 1 - Month 1-2 - The new team member will show an understanding of electrical safety, know how to do the job, and be competent to PAT test showing knowledge of all required areas. They will have read and understood the latest guidance in their own time and have shown that they can work as part of the team.
Level 2 - Months 2 to 3 - The new team member will be operating to company standards, and achieving daily target of 225 items per day average as a minimum.
Level 3 - Months 3 to 6 - The team member will be qualified by City and Guilds 2377, be doing their own reports to required standard, and be ready to work alone.
Level 4 - Up to 12 months - The team member will be achieving average daily target of 250 items, whilst maintaining quality standards.
Wages / Salary
Starting wage is £11.50 per hour, rising to £12.00ph when successfully achieved Level 1 of training.
Rising to £12.50ph on completion of Level 2
Rising to £13.00ph on completion of Level 3
Rising to £13.50ph on completion of Level 4
