**We have an exciting opportunity for a Graduate Environmental Advisor to start from September 2023**

The Graduate Environmental Advisor will form part of the Environment and Sustainability team, to support the delivery of the construction and handover phase of the HS2 Main Works Civils Contract.**

About the projects
**The HS2 Main Civils Contracts include both Lots S1 (Euston Tunnels & Approaches) and S2 (Northolt Tunnels). Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM driven), SCL tunnels/adits, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, utilities diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.

**Security Vetting**

HS2 requires SCS to undertake security vetting on all staff to the UK Government Baseline Personal Security Standard.

**Key Responsibilities**
- Understand the Client and Joint Venture Partners' Environment and Sustainability Policies, Processes and statutory requirements as they affect the contract's operations and ensure that the requirements are implemented on the project.
- Provide Environmental compliance advice to various team, including construction, procurement and subcontractors and suppliers on the practical implementation of contract policies, processes and requirements. Identify and provide training and upskilling required to fulfil environmental responsibilities of various delivery team roles.
- Undertake basic managerial duties, assigning tasks and providing support to Environmental Advisors.
- Identify and communicate environmental and sustainability risks and mitigations, assisting with the review and undertaking writing of plans, risk assessments and method statements. Providing critical on-site presence and advice to the delivery team.
- Drive awareness for and delivery against contract targets, particularly reducing Carbon and striving to achieve no-net loss in biodiversity and BREEAM/CEEQUAL 'Excellent' rating. Drive innovation and continuous improvement throughout the contract team.
- Provide advice and guidance, and where necessary assist with the obtaining legal consents, licenses and exemptions. Maintain good working relationships with external stakeholders such as local authorities, Natural England, EA, Thames Water and others as required and directed.
- Ensure works are in line with the Environmental Management System, certified to ISO 14001:2015, ensuring it remains appropriate to all contract risks. Monitor and collect data to aid reporting against performance against targets. Undertake a program of inspections and audits, including targeted risk monitoring, both on site and within the supply chain. Assist with any external audits, parent company, client and certification bodies were required.
- Understand the Company Health &Safety and Environmental Policies, Processes and statutory requirements as they affect the company's operations and ensure they are implemented.
- Assist in providing advice on the practical implementation of the company's Environmental policies and processes
- Assist the Environmental manager or delegate and Contract Management in the understanding of stakeholders (internal and external) aims, priorities and risks with regards to environmental aspects.
- Assist with the development of Environmental Management plans, if applicable, and coordination of their review.Assist in providing operational and functional management with advice on the prevention of accidents and incidents
- Provide advice and guidance for obtaining legal consents, licenses and exemptions such as discharge consents, abstraction licenses and waste management licenses as and when required and as directed.
- Data collection and management associated with environmental Key Performance Indicators and assisting with monthly environmental reporting.
- Assist the Environmental Manager and other members of the Environmental team, in key tasks to assist in the development, management, implementation and monitoring of the Environmental Management System.
- Assist the Environment Manager, or delegate and Contract Management in establishing, managing and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders such as local authorities, EA, PLA, MMO and others as required and directed.
- Assist with and undertake Environmental Advisory Visits, Inspections and Audits where required of operational sites.
- Participate, as requested in "Company" Group SHE audits. Research Environmental Issues and best practices as directed by the Environmental Manager or delegate.
- Assist in the investigation of accidents, incidents, dangerous occurrences, near misses and other incidents as directed.

**Costain Graduate Development Programme**

The program will focus on helping you to grow your personal and leadership skills, alongside business skills and of course, the technical skills you will learn day to day on the job.

The programme is delivered in a variety of formats throughout the 2 years and will allow you to establish a network of contacts that will help and support you through your first 2 years and beyond.

We expect some of our graduates to rotate after a period of 8 - 12 months to another project/sector of the business to fully understand the depth and breadth of the services offered by the company.

Our line managers are fully supportive of the Graduate Development Program and will be involved in helping you along the way.

In addition to the program, we offer mentoring and support in every area of work, as well as a structured training programme to enable graduates to work towards achieving Chartership.

Graduates may have the opportunity to work on a number of exciting and progressive projects around the UK during the 2-year programme, in sectors including nuclear, highways, rail, water, airports and tunnels.

**About you**

**-**BSc in Environmental Management/ Environmental Sciences or equivalent
- IT proficient
- Work experience (desirable)
- Able to work accurately and appreciate its importance to the team
- A willingness to learn with appropriate instruction
- Organised and able to prioritise workload
- Must be a team player
- Experience of delivering presentations, talking in public etc
- The ability to thrive in pressured situations
- The ability to empathise and communicate with all people, regardless of their background or circumstances
- Excellent organisation, communication, and time management skills
