Sheffield, United Kingdom University of Sheffield Full time

We have an exciting opportunity available to work as an Experimental Officer for the Sheffield Tomography Centre in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sheffield. This post will support the new EPSRC-funded state-of-the-art Zeiss Xradia 620 Versa High-resolution 3D X-ray Tomography Microscope and a range of in situ/in operando Mechanical and Electrochemical stages, for accessible, high-performance and multi-parameter in situ Materials Characterisation.

The objective of this EPSRC X-ray Microscope Facility is to provide the Materials Research Community with high-resolution, non-destructive 3D analysis of advanced materials to accelerate materials design/development in Advanced 3D Manufacturing; Energy and Environmental Systems; Structural Integrity, Composites and Tribology; and Biological Tissues and Biomaterials. It is essential to generate high specification MicroCT data and analysis to provide vital feedback to companies and research teams to develop and design improved products and to increase lifetime of existing products.

You will contribute to the running and development of this new Sheffield Tomography Facility. You will be responsible for the effective running and maintenance of the new X-ray Micro-Computed Tomography Microscope, implementing in-situ/in operando stages for environmental characterisation, and managing the computer suite for data acquisition and analysis. You will also be central to training, helping and developing the MicroCT user-base, and for supporting tomography research development including specimen preparation and related microscopy, in liaison with University Staff.

This role will be based at the University of Sheffield under the supervision of Prof Beverley Inkson (Department of Materials Science and Engineering/MSE) and Dr Christophe Pinna (Dept of Mechanical Engineering/MEC). You will support the research activities of researchers in over 50 academic groups within the Faculty of Engineering, together with an extensive network of external users (academic and industry). You will have the opportunity to contribute to the teaching and research activity of the University, and contribute to research publications and research proposals.
