Job overview

We offer a wide range of services from our medical to surgical wards, day case and outpatients, oncology, rheumatology, neurology, orthopaedics, ENT, Burns and Plastics, Cleft lip and Palate, children’s high independency and intensive care and long term ventilation. Not only that, we now have an exciting new role developed from our MRI project available.

Main duties of the job

To provide therapeutic intervention including preparation, distraction and post procedural play.

To be able to devise and implement play programmes for rehabilitation

To be able to produce procedure plan for our referral patients to help them through invasive and non invasive procedures.

To advocate for our patients and families.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be required to work some of the shift unsupervise.

To provide a welcoming, child friendly atmosphere with a caring, attitude towards children and their families.

To act as the child’s advocate ensuring the child’s best interests come first.

Understand the need and the use of preparation, distraction, post procedural and passive play and implement this to support the child and family through MRI Scans and treatment needed.

To understand the need for and initiate the use of specialised therapeutic play

To initiate and participate in preparation and distraction for invasive/painful procedures.

Work with the child’s family as a whole, respecting their needs and wishes whilst providing the best care for the child.

To provide written and verbal reports as required and ensure familiarity with documentation.

Be responsible for the general maintenance of toys and equipment as required.

To be responsible to the child and their family to ensure that correct preparation for procedures is given.

Attend ward/play staff meetings.

Liaise with play manager concerning professional development needs.

To take an active role in the training of nursery nursing, nursing, medical and Hospital Play Specialist students and completing their reports.

To demonstrate and teach members of the multi-disciplinary team (this may include going into the school of nursing) the theories and usage of play preparation within the department.

To undertake mandatory training cardio-pulmonary, child protection, moving and handling, fire safety and food handling.

Participate in the provision of on-going education for children and their families about recreation and play activities.

Participate in audits which provide information of the quality and quantity of care provided by Children’s Services.

Assist in monitoring and evaluating the service given to patients and their carers.

Following individual performance management (IPM), liaise with the Hospital Play Specialist Lead in agreeing how identified training and development needs are to be met.

Essential criteria
- HPSET Registered
- Healthcare Play Specialist Foundation Degree

Desirable criteria
- Level 3 - childcare
- Safeguarding Training

Experience

Essential criteria
- Minimum 2 years experience in a childcare setting

Desirable criteria
- minimum 1 year experience in a children's hospital
