**Job Purpose**
This fixed term Curatorial Assistant role funded by the Johnstone Sisters studentship Fund, created to give recent UoG post-graduates in History of Art an opportunity to gain paid work experience and develop professional skills within the museum sector.
The post is to support the curatorial team in the development, care, documentation, research, presentation, and interpretation of The Hunterian art collections in accordance with the Hunterian 2021-25 Strategic Plan, Museum policies and procedures, and sector best practice guidelines.

**Main Duties and Responsibilities**:

Under the direction of the Art Curators and Collection Management Team, develop skills in using The Hunterian’s collection management system, EMu, and a rigorous approach to cataloguing works of art. The post holder will receive essential training in the handling of works of art and knowledge of basic conservation for works on paper, paintings and decorative arts.
Under curatorial guidance, carry out data entry/cataloguing/photographing/editing and update existing catalogue records for the art collection. The post-holder will gain experience in object driven research (from provenance to exhibition/conservation history or bibliography) and the cataloguing of works of art.
Under curatorial guidance, prepare, write and edit a variety of object-related interpretative material for public display, labels, online, and other audiences.
Share concerns with line manager around any issues related to the physical condition and storage of works of art that put the collections at risk.
Under the guidance of the curatorial team, update and edit information available online or via EMu narratives.
Contribute to, and support as and when required, the development of Learning, Academic and Public programmes relating to the art collections.
Assist and support curatorial preparatory work for new displays, exhibitions, loans, and the maintenance of current displays.
Assist and support the curatorial team in answering art collections related enquiries; in dealing with art related requests from the public, university staff and students.

**Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience**

**Knowledge/Qualifications**

**Essential**:

A1 Education from the University of Glasgow in History of Art or a closely related discipline
A2 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 5 or 6 (Scottish Vocational Qualifications level 2 or 3 or equivalent.

**Desirable**:

B1 Recent graduate of the University of Glasgow.

**Skills**

**Essential**:

C1 Excellent IT skills including Microsoft Office, Word processing, Excel spreadsheet, Outlook, Teams and database use.
C2 Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English to work effectively with a wide range of people.
C3 Meticulous approach to the gathering and inputting of data.
C4 Ability to use a digital camera and process digital images.
C5 Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision.
C6 Effective planning, organising and time management skills.
C7 Excellent interpersonal skills and discretion.

**Desirable**:

D1 Ability to handle art objects safely, assessing risk and seeking advice accordingly.
D2 Familiarity with at least one European language.
D3 Ability to lift 15 kgs.

**Experience**

**Essential**:

E1 Experience of working in an art gallery/museum or teaching role.
E2 Experience of inputting data to a museum database, preferably K-Emu.
E3 Experience of handling and cataloguing art objects, in particular works on paper.
E4 Experience with digital photography.
E5 Ability to undertake object-based research.

**Terms and Conditions**
Salary will be on Grade 4, £22,681 - £25,138 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hours p/w) and fixed term to 30 August 2024. The University would consider a secondment opportunity for this post.
