Clinical Associate in Applied Psychology

Irvine, United Kingdom NHS Scotland Full time

The post-holder will be part of the Clinical Health Psychology Specialty which is part of the wider NHS Ayrshire & Arran Psychological Service. NHS Ayrshire & Arran Psychological Services comprises of over 100 staff including Clinical Psychologists, Counselling Psychologists, Clinical Nurse Specialists in CBT, Clinical Associates in Applied Psychology, Counsellors, Graduate Assistant Psychologists and Masters and Doctoral Psychology Trainees. The Psychological Service delivers area-wide psychological provision through the Director Psychological Services, Heads of Psychological Specialty and Consultant Psychology Leads across the Psychological Specialties.

Services are delivered to the population directly through specialist therapeutic intervention with patients with complex difficulties. Psychological Services provides expert advice, consultancy, training and supervision in order to develop the psychological skills of other health and non-health professionals. It also aims to enhance the delivery of psychological care across the whole healthcare system through formal contribution at strategic and planning levels.

This post will be based within the Acute Clinical Health Psychology Service - a friendly, supportive and stimulating environment in which to work. The post holder will have operational day to day and professional line management by the Consultant Clinical Psychologist as an employee of the NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Psychological Service. The Clinical Health Psychology service consists of a number of Clinical Psychologists, CAAPs and Assistant Psychologists working across acute medical specialties including Cardiac, Oncology, Long Covid, Pain, ICU, Bariatric, Weight Management and General Medicine. This post will be expected to work across specialties according to need, and is likely to be involved in the ADAPT service which is a new outpatient primary care service that bridges the gap for patients with long-term health conditions and associated mild-to moderate low mood and/or anxiety, who have little access to appropriate services in terms of their mental health needs as their condition is managed in primary care

The post-holder will provide Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and other evidence based Psychological interventions to adults who present with long-term physical health conditions and who are experiencing mild to moderate anxiety and/or depression and adjustment difficulties. The team operates a brief model of care with referrals coming from within the acute specialty teams. Clinics are held in a number of premises throughout Ayrshire. There will be opportunities for teaching, training and supervision of other health professionals and the post-holder will work closely with colleagues both from within the Psychological Specialty (when engaging in tasks such as assessment and vetting of referrals) and also from the wider acute service.

The service places a strong emphasis on governance and has a number of internal special interest and working groups. We provide excellent opportunities for CPD to support high-quality service delivery to patients and career development for our staff. The service has close links with the University of Glasgow, Clinical Psychology Doctoral Training Programme and both the Adult and Child Clinical Associates in Applied Psychology Programmes at Dundee, Stirling and Edinburgh Universities.

Given our pan-Ayrshire service across three Partnership areas, a car driver is essential.

You must have successfully attained MSc Psychological Therapy in Primary Care and be accreditable or accredited with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies.
