Full-time Locum Consultant Neonatology and Neonatal Transport for Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

This is a 12 month post to cover Maternity Leave. The successful applicant will join an integrated team of 17 (15 NHS and 2 Academic) Consultants, 3 Specialty doctors and 12 middle grade Trainees providing neonatal care within Nottingham. The post will be based at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

The post is suitable for either an experienced Neonatologist with a CCT in Paediatrics (Neonatal Medicine) or equivalent or a senior trainee within 6 months of CCT in Paediatrics (Neonatal Medicine) or equivalent.

Main duties of the job

The neonatal service provides consultant-led clinical care. This means involvement in a high proportion of clinical decision making, particularly during intensive care episodes.

Working for our organisation

The Neonatal service within Nottingham is a single service that comprises two tertiary Neonatal Intensive Care Units based at Nottingham City Hospital and the Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC). Both these Neonatal Intensive Care Units are part of the East Midlands Operational Delivery Network (EM-ODN) and are lead centres for its northern hub. The full range of medical neonatal intensive care is provided at both sites apart from ECMO. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at QMC also provides the services for neonatal surgery, including ENT and neurosurgery for the network and neonatal intensive care for the quaternary renal service. The Nottingham Neonatal Service is linked closely with the Regional Fetal Medicine service that operates on both sites.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

- Diagnosis, treatment, management and continuing care of all newborn infants born in Nottingham or referred to the Nottingham tertiary Neonatal Service
- Consultant led neonatal transport
- Provision of Clinical Leadership
- Ensuring high quality communication with the parents and families
- Ensuring high quality communication with the multidisciplinary teams
- Active involvement in the Clinical Governance and Management activity that supports the service
- Teaching, training, supervising and assessing neonatal staff and students.
- Knowledge of and adherence to Child Protection and Safeguarding guidelines for practice within the trust
- Improvement of the quality and safety of the service
- Direct patient care during transport

Professional Registration

Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration
- Registration on the Specialist Register as sub-specialist in Neonatal Medicine or within 6 months of CCT in Paediatrics (Neonatal Medicine) or equivalent qualification

Professional Qualifications/Development

Essential criteria
- MRCPCH. Member of RCPCH

Desirable criteria
- Higher Degree (MSc, MD or PhD)

Clinical Skills/Experience

Essential criteria
- Grid Training or equivalent training in Neonatal Medicine
- Extensive neonatal experience and advanced skills in neonatal medicine.
- NLS Provider.
- Significant neonatal transport experience

Desirable criteria
- Having acted in or had experience of Consultant role.
- Advanced skills in an area of special interest within neonatology.
- Echocardiography training and experience.
- NLS instructor.
- Formal training in neonatal transport.

Teaching and Audit

Essential criteria
- Evidence of participation in Clinical Audit.
- Able to teach and support junior staff effectively

Desirable criteria
- Completed teaching courses/training/qualification
- Appraisal and assessment training and skills.
- Presentations at learned societies.
- Original Research Publications.
- Higher teaching degree or qualification or training.

Management Skills

Essential criteria
- Able to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/delivery.
- Able to delegate appropriately.
- Able to work in a team

Desirable criteria
- Higher management degree or qualification or training.
- Experience of change management
- Completed QI or similar management projects
