All the Haematology inpatient and outpatient facilities for adults (over 16 years of age) in Sheffield are based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital (RHH), with a population served by the laboratory in Sheffield of around 600,000 and North Trent of close to 2 million. The inpatient facilities comprise of 3 inpatient wards, including 29 side rooms, 11 of which are HEPA filtered for all levels of of Haemopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation and Leukaemic induction therapy. Nearby are extensive dedicated day case facilities, an Apheresis Unit (managed by the NHSBT) and the Centre for Haemophilia and Thrombosis. Chemotherapy of all intensities is administered to out-patients on the Day Ward, as are the majority of blood transfusions, venesections, and early follow-up of BMT patients is conducted.
Ambulatory care (based either at home or from a dedicated patient flat) is offered to clinically eligible patients undergoing myeloma and lymphoma autografts, lymphoma salvage chemotherapy and AML consolidation chemotherapy. The Sheffield Comprehensive Care Haemophilia Centre (CCC) is based on ward P4, providing multidisciplinary care to patients with inherited and acquired bleeding disorders. Sheffield CCC is a World Federation of Haemophilia International Training Centre, and is registered with the European Haemophilia Network (led by Professor Makris). Joint Haematology/Obstetric clinics are delivered in the antenatal clinic at the Jessop Wing, and the team also care for patients with acquired haemostatic and thrombosis disorders (acquired haemophilia, thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura, immune thrombocytopenia).
The majority of patients with Venous Thromboembolim (VTE) are managed in an ambulatory fashion by specialist nurses who hold daily clinics (Monday-Friday) within the anticoagulation clinic on B floor RHH, supported by Haematology medical staff through the thrombosis MDT. For the Northern General Hospital (NGH), the clinical services are provided during the day by an Associate Specialist, and the Specialist Registrars.
