No. 2 Herdsperson

My father started the dairy side of the farm in 1965 in Cornwall. In 1977 we moved all the cows to the Cotswolds where we are tenant farmers now. Over the past 35 years, we have grown the herd from 80 cows to the current number of 280 plus followers. I consider this to be the optimum number for the size of farm we have. Therefore the main objective is to produce milk using the most efficient system available to us that suits the land we farm and the season thrown at us. We are happy to adapt to challenges laid down and are always looking for new ideas and utilising new technology to keep moving forward. The 2 robots were installed in Nov 2011 and May 2010 and whilst it has been a challenge to become an expert at both types of management, it has been an enjoyable experience.

**No.2 Herdsperson position requirements-**

A good stockperson - 280 cows and 200 followers.

Team player - working with Herdsperson and Tractor driver.

Good communication skills and a sense of humour.

Milking ability - once a day and holiday cover.

Calf rearing experience.

Tractor driving ability - scraping, feeding and bedding of cows.

Willing to learn - courses will be provided where necessary (foot trimming, grazing management, medicine administration etc).

A desire to work beyond the dairy buildings - fencing and grazing management.

Be able to rise to a challenge when required.

Have the ability to work independently.

Computer literate.

Non smoker.

Driving licence.

We grow a majority of feeds on farm over approx. 300ha.

We utilise a TMR system, using grazing during the season.
