Opal house is a 41 bedded stand -alone unit based over two floors. Nurses and Nurse Assistants are allocated a unit to work in each shift, there are 4 units, 2 on each floor. Allocation of work will be provided each morning. Medical team also based at Opal house Monday to Friday to support with overview from the Consultant, occupational therapists, physiotherapy assistant and discharge nurses also support the Ward in discharge planning and assessment for patients.

The Job overview for Nursing Assistants in Opal house is to assist in the daily care needs and support with activities of daily living of the in-patients. Maintain daily routine and promote independence where possible and when needed provide hands on care and support for patients. The Ward and Units are busy and discharge and admission of patients is a daily occurrence, the Nursing Assistants will support with assisting the Nurses to welcome new patients, book in property, orientate to the ward units and pack property on discharge and ensure policies and procedures are followed whilst maintaining friendly professional attitude with excellent team work ethics. Extra skills may be learnt whilst working and you may be offered further training with monitoring vital signs, taking bodily fluid samples and blood sugar testing to name just a few.

Working as part of a team and on own initiative to assist patients and other members of the MDT to admit, assess and plan discharge of patients. This will include but is not exhaustive of the following duties;
Documenting oral intake of diet and fluids

Property checks on admission and amending this during patient stay

Assisting in serving meals to patients and feeding patients if required

Assisting with washing and dressing of patients as needed

Working with patients with Dementia and other health care needs

Communicating with patients and staff

Toileting of patients as needed - may include assisting with personal hygiene

Taking samples of bodily fluids as requested

Being aware of infection prevention policies

Reporting to Senior colleagues any concerns/safeguarding

Observing high falls risk patients to provide safety

Working with moving and handling equipment, falls sensor alarms

Input of patient information on computer systems

Knowledge of IT systems will be needed (New HIVE system going live September 2022) full training will be given

Maintaining own mandatory training and e-learning

Annual appraisals with line manager

Probationary review upon employment
