Peer support is recognised as a key component of modern mental health and wellbeing provision.

A key feature of this post is to promote individual person centred recovery by drawing on the peer support workers own personal lived experience of mental health challenges and of accessing mental health services.

Please note that this role requires applicants to have lived experience of recovering from mental health difficulties and of receiving care in secondary mental health services (acute inpatient, community mental health team or specialist mental health service, for example). Applicants who do not hold this lived experience need not apply.

Do you have directlivedexperience of recovery from mental health challenges and of accessing secondary care mental health services?
- To work directly with an identified caseload of individuals and their carers through a range of methods including, video/telephone call, text and in person face to face sessions.
- To work with identified individuals and members of the wider MDT to ensure care plans are truly co-produced.
- To draw on own lived experience to offer understanding, support and hope to individuals accessing the service and promote independence and recovery.
- Contribute to the overall care of an individual, helping to identify any early warning signs of deteriorating wellbeing by monitoring an individual’s mental health, level of functioning and mental state, escalating any areas of concerns to the relevant senior staff member
- Drawing on personal experience to help individuals to identify their strengths and triggers and supporting them to establish the things that are important to them in their life, identifying goals and the steps they wish to take to achieve them
- Supporting individuals to identify and overcome any barriers which may impact their recovery
- Champion a recovery orientated service including promoting involvement, engagement, participation and co-production opportunities.
- Actively promote and support individuals to be involved in the ongoing review and evaluation of services and encourage them to participate in co-designing and co-delivering services as part of their longer term recovery
- Works to policy and protocols within own area of work

As a pivotal and highly valued member of the team, peer support workers will have a case load of identified patients who they will work with on both an individual basis and by delivering group interventions, working in collaboration with the wider multi-disciplinary team.

This formalised peer support will allow the post holder to provide a safe space for individuals to talk and make sense of their experiences whilst sharing wisdom from their own recovery to inspire hope and belief that recovery is possible.

They will promote choice, self-determination and opportunities and assist the individual to set and achieve their own unique recovery goals and recognising that each individual’s recovery is a distinctive and deeply personal process.

Their work may also involve providing practical assistance such as encouraging healthy lifestyles, helping individuals to build confidence, and offering information, advice and support to form connections within their local community resources.

Peer support workers will support individual’s to co-produce their care plan with members of the wider multi-disciplinary team and contribute to the overall team management of complex clinical and risk presentations. They will champion recovery and work closely with all
