**JOB TITLE: DISPENSER**

**REPORTS TO: DISPENSARY MANAGER**

**HOURS: 30hrs per week**

**Summary**:
To provide quick, efficient and accurate dispensing of medication to the patients, and to assist the Dispensary Manager in ensuring effective financial control of the dispensary. To process all relevant prescriptions as authorised by GPs and prescribing nurses where appropriate in accordance with the principles of good practice.

**Responsibilities**:
**Dispensing**

Follow Dispensary Standard Operating procedures to include:

- Dispensing private prescriptions.
- Checking colleagues’ dispensing and recording inaccuracies in practice system.
- Packaging and checking Blister packs.
- Ensuring the Dispensary area remains clean and tidy.

**Prescriptions**
- Taking prescription repeats over the telephone and at the patients’ hatch.
- Handing out prescriptions and collecting due prescription charges ensuring patient declaration is completed.
- Ensure all monies received or handled are appropriately stored and a record kept of all financial transactions
- Endorse all prescription forms as appropriate
- Collecting private charges for vaccines and holiday prophylactic medication.
- Sorting, stamping and endorsing prescriptions.
- Completing backs of prescriptions.
- Generating prescriptions.

**Stock Control**

Operate an efficient stock control system involving:

- Ordering appropriate quantities of goods via the wholesaler’s computer link.
- Checking goods as and when they are delivered and recording generic details.
- Returning incorrect goods to the wholesalers.
- Stocking shelves, refrigerators and other storage areas using rotation method.
- Removing ‘out of date’ stock from the shelves, refrigerators and other storage areas.
- Disposal of returned unused medicines.
- Ensuring that drugs are stored in an appropriate manner in accordance with the accompanying instructions.

This Job Description is neither exhaustive nor exclusive and will be reviewed periodically in conjunction with the post holder. The post holder is required to carry out any duties that may reasonably be requested by the Doctors, the Dispensary Manager or the Practice Manager.

**Confidentiality**:

- In the course of seeking treatment, patients entrust us with, or allow us to gather, sensitive information in relation to their health and other matters. They do so in confidence and have the right to expect that staff will respect their privacy and act appropriately
- In the performance of the duties expected of a dispenser, the post-holder may have access to confidential information relating to patients and their carers, Practice staff and other healthcare workers. They may also have access to information relating to the Practice as a business organisation. All such information from any source is to be regarded as strictly confidential
- Information relating to patients, carers, colleagues, other healthcare workers or the business of the Practice may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the Practice policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data

- The post-holder will follow procedures as to promote and manage their own and others’ health and safety and infection control as defined in the practice policies.
