This Fellowship post will commence on 1 August 2024 for a period of 12 months, full time. It will allow exposure to a range of both paediatric and adult spinal disorders.

The post is designed to accommodate a qualified clinician, who has attained CCT in Trauma and Orthopaedics or equivalent, or who is on the specialist register, and who would like to gain a further period of development in the sub-specialty of Spinal Surgery in preparation for a consultant role.

The fellow is allocated a specific job plan which combines both outpatient and theatre activity.

The post holder will have excellent opportunities to gain experience of outpatient and inpatient care and will be given the opportunity to develop their skills in the assessment investigation and treatment of patients with paediatric spinal disorders. Outpatient activity will include access to routine spinal deformity clinics.

A strong commitment from the post holder to support the regular clinic and
theatre sessions will be essential.

The role will be supported by consultants within the team to allow for the widest possible exposure to different surgical techniques for complex conditions while undertaking independent clinics. The training needs of the Fellow will be considered before determining the amount of time spent with different consultants.

The Department boasts of a strong research background. There are close links with Keele University. The Fellow would be expected to show a strong research commitment is expected to have at least two peer reviewed publications at the end of the tenure.

The junior staffing at Oswestry consists of 18 Specialty Registrars who will usually be in the more senior years of training (ST5 - ST8). Orthopaedic Service Registrars also support the complement of Specialty Registrars in Orthopaedics. It will be the responsibility of the Spinal Fellow to supervise the Specialty Registrars and Orthopaedic Service Registrars within the Spinal Disorders team.
